Usually I create the assembly I am working on in the traditional way and then think about the fold-flat adaptations. But for this roof I started to make sure how the fold-flat version could work right form the start. So above you see my latest working prototype on the shrine I have so far.
The roof is actually made of two modules. There is the core part that you place on the walls (of the shrine or any 4x4" wall set) and then you have the wider roof over it.

And this is how I actually unfold them. I had some different ways of how to split up the parts but I think this is a very efficient and practical way to do it.

This design is very close to the roof I have designed for the Asian Bell Tower set. The only thing I had to let go was the outermost edge part as there simply is no way to attach that to the wide roof assembly in a sturdy way. I will add it for traditional (fixed) build but I am very happy how the roof looks even without it!
There are a couple of minor things I want to work on but I am glad that I was able to make this unfold work. Here is a last shot at the underbelly of the roof assembly.

Looking forward, I dare say, the textured version will be a thing of beauty! :-)
Happy building,
Chris
