Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Self Control [4x15] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh what an episode! One of the best (and worst) Fitz-Simmons scenes ever. 🫨 [Direct link here.]

I'm looking forward to your thoughts! Thanks so much for watching and for being so patient, since I know we had that huge cliffhanger after Episode 14. Honestly, I loved the wait.

Cheers,

LOL yeah. 😂 But in a safe and controlled environment!

Something I noticed while rewatching - in your review for 4x11, you did suggest that Fitz starting cutting people open to check if they are LMDs...

First a shoutout to that beautiful blouse you are wearing along with the makeup... I shall call you "Flowers" season one throw back ! The whole episode, top notch acting with the emotions form the Fitz Simmons scene to the Daisy and simmons Scene... to the non emotional acting of Coulson and Mack... everyone was great... then you have Android may who might be more human than real May lol j/k... its all insane.... to the rebirth of Framework Ward.... He's back lol. Aida killing the Dr just enough to put him/his mind back into the Framework to meet her program guidelines diabolic indeed but brilliant.... soundlike shes tring to gain emotions through the darkhold. Now she has a droid body guard after she cut his head off... crazy times ahead !

Everything I wanted to say has already been said. Incredible episode, probably my favourite! Iain De Caestecker's (Fitz) acting is mind-blowing. The writing is sooo good. I'll comment on your afterthoughts once I can hear them without getting tinnitus. 😂

Onno Smits

Also, Jemma was never alone. She was with Davis the whole time.

Top tier episode. Great reaction. I wanted to add a possible explanation for why only Daisy and Simmons were not taken in 4x14. They both got lost in the Russians base while looking for the others. They both comment on it so Aida could not find them before the sub was forced to leave.

This is without a doubt my absolute favorite episode of the show. An incredible masterpiece. Many people have pointed out many things about it, but I want to center on one scene: LMD May's sacrifice. Here we have a robot copy of the most robotic character, having an incredibly emotional scene, and acting more human than anyone. As she herself said, the programming to get the Darkhold came from Radcliff, but the rest is ALL May. And there's no way in hell May wouldn't help Daisy and Jemma. That's what makes her the most human of the LMDs. The others talk in a robotic way, without emotion. But not her. The moment that always gets me is when she says: "Are you afraid to die? Cause I am". That line makes me tear up every time. What a stellar performance from Ming-Na Wen. People always comment on the performances of Ian de Castecker and Elizabeth Hernstridge (Rightfuly so, they are incredible), but she deserves some love too. Now we start the final arc (and my favorite) of the season. Buckle up, because we have more amazing episodes until the ending! PS: I hope I could convey properly my thoughts, because English is not my first language hahaha. With love from Spain!

Thanks for your thoughts!

this episode might be one of, if not my absolute, favorites. EVERYONE brought their a game, every actor played their part perfectly, but honestly believe Ming-Na Wen (Mei), Chloe Bennet (Daisy), and ESPECIALLY Iain De Caestecker Fitz) and Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma) all deserved recognition for this episode those scenes in the workshop, i honestly believe they both deserved awards of some kind, Fitz seamlessly going from distraught to LMD mode when he turns on Jemma, the whole exchange with Jemma holding the gun, but especially, especially the scene where Jemma 'kills' Fitzdroid, from Jemma's emotional break, to Fitz screaming for his life as the love of his life is murdering him then instantly switching to LMD mode and trying to kill her back, the scene is Brutal, but so amazingly acted, its one of my favourite scene in the show simply because of their acting in it. i assume you will in editing, but if you dont, when you get a chance, go back and watch those scene now you know how they play out , without the suspense you can truly see how amazingly they both acted them. then Jemma and Daisy in the storage room is another scene that is amazing, you can see how broken they both already are from the events they saw/had to do, its just, once against, brutal but brilliant And Meidroid, i adore how Meidroid was used to show nature vs nurture, to show how the 'other' LMDs arent alive, but not because their LMDs, because they were programmed from the start, while IMO, she was alive, that LMD, that Mei, was alive and real, she had feelings, regrets, and it showed how the LMDs didnt even consider that she might betray them, because they dont have either. Thank you for the amazing reaction as always, so glad you enjoyed this episode so much.

Yes, Daisy and Jemma are a great gal duo. Enjoy them so much.

kaiielle

So many cliffhangers. 😂 Never had this many in AOS before!

kaiielle

Love it! Please enjoy!

kaiielle

I love that for him! Such a great episode full of so much awesome!

kaiielle

Ooooooof 😂😂

kaiielle

Oh fun! And yes, I like LMayD!

kaiielle

Totally agree.

One of the most rewatchable episodes of any TV show, incredible from start to finish! Fitz and Simmons are not only the best characters in the show but have the strongest actors too

As everyone else has pointed out this was an marvelous episode which ramps up the tension from the very first scene right up to the last scenes of our teams alternates in the Framework. Although he has written many episodes theis was the first that co-showrunner Jed Whedon had written & directed, I guess when you run the show you can cherry pick the best episodes! LMD May was the weak? link in the plan to stop Daisy & Jemma as she was programmed as a sleeper agent and was more similar to May than her newer counterparts.

Oh, one other thing - how would you say this *single episode* compares with Secret Invasion? 😛 There's not even a contest! And just to rub it in, although exact budget figures for AoS aren't available so we can't be sure, a reasonable ballpark for the cost of this episode would be around 2% of what was spent on Secret Invasion (rough figures for AoS seasons are around 25%-30% of Secret Invasion's budget, and that's for 22 episodes...)

What is there to say about this episode? Currently carries a 9.4 rating on IMDB, and after watching pretty much everyone says it's the best episode they've seen up to that point. Everything about it is superb: - excellent performances from the cast, especially from Iain and Elizabeth (as we've come to expect at this point TBH), but Chloe and Ming's performances also stand out - stunning fight scenes/choreography - great effects work, not only on the VFX but also the practical shots of the damaged LMD Fitz Since a few people get confused about Daisy not being an LMD, the report we see at the end of last episode is deliberately a little misleading to help sow suspicion - if you look carefully, it says that the total number of LMDs detected is a *compilation* of all the reports, not the number detected in that report. The initial shots of the team in Radcliffe/Ivanov's base then also deliberately exclude Fitz to further that suspicion. The reason for the large number of Daisy LMDs is given by LMD Coulson - the idea is that each Daisy LMD will personally "great" an Inhuman, i.e. execute them. Basically it's how Ivanov's goal of killing the Inhumans is to be accomplished. I love LMD May's speech at the end - it shows that she is real. As Radcliffe's mission to retrieve the Darkhold no longer applies, she's not any different from actual May - aside from knowing she's an LMD. Also exposes more about May's true feelings for Coulson. Then, just a minor cliff-hanger to end the episode - Ward is back, Jemma is apparently dead, and May is working for Hydra!? Incidentally, this was written by (showrunner) Jed Whedon, and is also his directorial debut.

So sorry! Big mistake I didn't realize. I can't fix until tomorrow. 🥲

kaiielle

Oh shoot, I have to redo that! Unfortunately I can't fix it until tomorrow. Ahhh so sorry!

kaiielle

Audio mix in the review is off - the usual background music is so loud that I can't really hear what you're saying 🙁

Sean Ellingham

The outro music for your video is a little louder than normal hard to hear your review. Love your reaction tho.

Christopher simeon

Here we MOTHERFUCKING go! There's still greatness to come...but this is my all-time favorite episode of AoS. It's also just one of my all-time favorite episodes of anything. The build-up, the pay-off, the fight scene, the cat-and-mouse, the epic ending, the cliffhanger, the fucked-up FitzSimmons of it, the Daisy and Jemma duo, and the incredibly human, incredibly sad, incredibly beautiful LMD Melinda May going out with love in her heart. The next part of the season--Arc number 3--is probably my favorite single arc of the show; and there's an episode that comes pretty close to the highs of this one down the line here. But this episode....hoy shit. I'm going to put away my groceries, cook me up some food, and sit down to watch this with you. Good fucking shit.

Steve Mercier

def a top contender for one of my favorite episodes - there is just so much good about it!! Lots of cliffhangers this season! They are just speeding through great storylines (and I mean that as the highest of compliments as I hate when shows drag things out).

codenamewitch xx

Yeah, that’s right. I forgot about that. This was the first time we had two mid-season breaks. The wait was agonizing.

Daisy pretty much spoke for the majority of the fandom if not the entirety. Some were already shipping Fitz and Simmons from the very beginning, but as the first season went on more fans gradually felt the same. Something I loved about this episode is their sisterhood. Daisy and Jemma have endured so much together. Between Daisy feeling like an outcast for a time because she got powers she neither asked nor prepared herself for to Jemma being thrown to a far distant deserted planet with almost no return and everything else in between, they’re still alive and all the more stronger. When one of the two feels down, the other is there to help her stand her ground. This also had one of my favorite fight scenes in the entire show. Daisy pulled a Sarah O’Connor like a boss and didn’t hesitate to shred android impostors to pieces. Sigourney Weaver should be proud.

Those of us watching live had a ~6 week break after this episode!
