The Pacific | Part Five | Full Reaction

Finally getting back into this miniseries after a bit of a longer break, I apologize for the delay! This episode was like diving into an ice bath, though. As always, the brutal reality of war was relentless. The combat on Peleliu was difficult to imagine and the veteran's description of it in the introduction had me nervous for the next few episodes. It was heartbreaking to watch Sledge's transformation begin as he struggled to hold onto his humanity while witnessing the horrors of battle around him. This episode made me reflect on the true cost of war, both physically and mentally.

Salt pills were important when they couldn't eat. When you drink water, it not only keeps you hydrated but it also flushes the natural salts and sugars out of your system. Too much hydration without replacing those minerals can result in hyponatremia, which is a potentially fatal condition that often presents like heat exhaustion initially. Which, in turn, often results in people drinking even more water to alleviate the symptoms. That then exacerbates things further and it gets to the point where you can't keep plain water down and begin vomiting it back up. Salt pills were the 1940s equivalent of oral rehydration salts, which can be put into your water to keep those minerals in your body.

Sorry you're still dealing with being sick. SNAFU is actually an acronym used in the military for Situation Normal, All F'd UP. It's a nickname given to him because his character fits that description.
