The Summer Update

Here is a quick summer update about what is being planned in this busy time of year, at least for me. Some important videos are in the queue, primarily based on feedback or messages I get. So if you have a request, let me know, and I'll put it on my list. And I read every comment, so if you've made a request, I do have it.

Thank you, to you, for being a patron. The support does help. Most of my videos are niche techniques and will never get mainstream traction on YouTube, so ad revenue isn't going to support the channel. But doing the research and buying the equipment is expensive. Most of the equipment I buy for these videos is to demonstrate what I want to show you. Some of the equipment might get used in the future, but maybe not. Your contributions help fund the things you want to learn.

Next Video

The final video in the carbonation series will deal with counter-pressure bottle filling, which is the epitome of good carbonated water. As I mentioned in the Carbonated Water on Tap video, bottled carbonated water is better due to better flow control and just like shaking a bottle of soda, anytime you disturb carbonated water, the results can get messy.

Emulsions: Important Upcoming Video

Basic soda is relatively easy to make, and I've outlined the steps using classic soda fountain methods (essential oils and alcohol) in previous videos. But for many, accessing alcohol with a high ABV can be difficult because of laws and regulations. For example, California does not allow the sale of grain alcohol above 60% abv, and many countries prohibit the sale of alcohol altogether. This video will help answer one of the most frequently asked questions I get, can you make soda without alcohol, and the answer is yes. But it is a touch complicated, but I'll do my best to simplify it as usual.

Next Phase

After the emulsion video, the first phase of this project will be complete. This series of videos demonstrates all the basic techniques for making soda and other non-alcoholic flavours.

The second phase will look more at recipe development like old soda formulations for Coca-Cola or modern ones like Crystal Pepsi—and the Crystal Pepsi video goes hand-in-hand with the Emulsion video. Here is a short list of the videos I'm working on (in the full list there are 300+ videos I could make):

I will also probably add some more mainstream content, like a series on my Top 15 Cocktails (it's a good story as well) just to boost my YouTube viewership, but that will be done as a second video per week. I'm assuming that I'll have more time in the fall and the cocktail-type videos will be much easier to produce than the technique and science videos (less research, purchasing and retakes).

I'm enthusiastic about doing all of these things, but time is the limiting factor. Stick around and I will get to make them.

That's it for now and thanks again. Cheers

Comments

It is in the works, I had to order a counter-pressure bottle filler rig to handle the higher pressures. The beer bottle versions work fine at 15 psi when handheld, but above that you need some form of clamping mechanism to retain the pressure and prevent CO2 from escaping. And since this thing came from China ($200) and is based on a drill press with non-standard fittings, I'm doing some modifications. I try to do things well, but that leads me down these paths of buying something and then ordering parts to keep modifying it, which is bad for video production efficiency. And glad the previous videos have helped, this one will too.

Any update on the counter-pressure bottle filling video? Or was it posted someplace and I simply over looked it? You've helped my home carbonation game immensely.

I will be doing multiple root beer recipes, because as you mention there are just so many of them. But I'll start with one and work my way up, then do a comparison. Cheers

I'm looking forward to all of these. Considering the number of root beer recipes there are in the old manuals, it might be a fun trip to make a series comparing them. I can't wait to hear your take on tonic/cinchona. Hard seltzer is a great topic and we can make so much better than the commercial stuff that sucks. I've been playing around with that and hard root beer/ginger ale myself.
