As we get more into beverage formulations, I decided there needed to be a better way to share information, recipes and documents. Patreon is great for linear things like podcasts but not so great for the stuff I do, so I put together a website that can do that, and it works seamlessly with Patreon.
The site is called Flavour Zone (https://flavour.zone), and it will be a central point for documentation as I put together recipes, ingredient details, safety documents, book lists and calculators. All of this is designed so it is easier for everyone to skip the math and just do the fun stuff, like making cool and interesting flavours. I will still publish the recipe information sheets for recipes that need better details on Patreon.
Each Patreon membership level will get specific benefits, like access to formulas and ingredients, whereas higher levels will get access to advanced calculators. For now, I've made it open to everyone on the Drink Support level and above, but in a few weeks, the site will start to reflect the different membership levels. This site will help provide more benefits to you.
Here is an example: I have been working on a root beer recipe for a video and have found what I believe to be a perfect substitute for sassafras, which will help me do old formulas from the 1800s. But some of these ingredients could be a complete video on their own, and making videos about ingredients that only a handful of people care about wouldn't be a productive use of my time. This is where the written word comes in handy. Plus, the information can be used for each different formulation we make. So things like vanilla and cinnamon, which get used a lot, don't need to be repeated, just a simple link to the document.
So, the recipe will have links to all the ingredients, providing you with all the information necessary. Then, in the near future, I'll be working on a calculator where you enter the ingredients and pick how much you want to make, and it will do most of the math for you. It can help guide your formulations and indicate whether you are using an excessive amount of any ingredient.
At least, that is the plan. I'm still figuring out a few technical things. As I've mentioned before, I studied chemistry, not computer science, but I seem capable of creating a decent database. The only issue is having all the tools access one database of information, but currently, that is more difficult than it sounds, mostly due to how the calculation plugin works. Anyway, I'm sure I will figure it out in short order.
For now, check it out and if you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please post them below.
