Self Portrait Process

The main thing that I was going for (even while taking reference) is getting a good strong cast shadow from the brow and having overall strong, dramatic light from the top. I wanted the main spotlighted area and the ear to really pop forward, so most of the silhouette edges are soft or lost. I thought it would be really interesting to have the actual edges of the profile barely readable, since that would generically be the first read when getting a likeness.

The only real brushwork/detail is in the light as well - I wanted to simulate translucency in the shadows to push them back, and thick, opaque paint in the lights to have them come forward.

I also realized the glowing eye effect kinda messes with what I was going for, trying to push shadows back, but it was too cool to pass up and created a lot of interest that would have otherwise just wandered around the cheek and ear area.

Thank you! I didn't make any of my brushes, I just scavenged them from a couple other packs

Wow great quality video! I was wondering if you could share your brushes? They seem to have a nice flow and texture.
