The Chechen Wars part III: A Ticket To Hell

The First Chechen War began with the dysfunctional Yeltsin government promising a tidy "restoration of constitutional order". What they delivered was a mechanized pilgrimage to slaughter: military convoys being ambushed before even reaching Chechnya, maps that were so old they lacked even the designated rendezvous points, rebels armed with RPGs sold to them by the corrupt oligarchs living in the antechambers of the government that sent the army in. Yet the conscripts bled forward anyway, dragging wounded through flame‑gutted stairwells, storming the city of Grozny house‑by‑house, holding shattered bridges against waves of enemies...

This episode is not very hopeful. Yet it covers an extremely important period in Russia's modern history that is absolutely crucial to understand its transition from the 90s to the 00s.

Conscription armies work like that. You do your mandatory military service in i.e. rangers, you're counted to that lot.

Absolutely harrowing. But I found liberal activist complicity the most shocking. A textbook case in the hypocrisy and moral blindness of western type liberalism. Would be interested to hear more on that topic in 1990s Russia

Great work guys.

I think I broke through MSM BS here in UK. People are pretty much brain washed on twisted narratives on Russia and current Ukraine-Russian war. But what is bringing people around slowly but surely, absolute appalling socio economic state of present day Britain. Kier is so unliked. Thank you guys, you have earned a new paying Patreon.

As an American, coming in, the only thing I knew about this conflict was that grozny was completely leveled. I can still remember the pictures of the devastation. And later on, I found that one of my favorite memes of 'current times America' was actually taken in this conflict. It's the "hey friend, listen, I know the world is scary right now but... It's gonna get way worse"

Thankyou for the episode. I am eagerly awaiting the second half though! Wars like this one will always retain a value in the lessons they can teach. We should strive to learn them better than our enemies and encourage friends to do the same.

Question about the spetsnaz conscripts, why were they conscripts? Why were men being conscripted for what is a special forces force? it seems antithetical to the meaning of elite? 2nd Question about the old maps. Was there any given reason Russian sattelites could not be used to create an updated map?

Beginning the episode now. One thing I wonder is why send so few troops? 15,000 is indeed too few. I still have a hard time understanding the actual size of the Russian army at the time. was the active army not around 500,000 thousand and counting. What was stopping the Russians from sending an inital force of around 30,000 or so?
