Sorry I have no idea what could cause this, it's not something I have experienced and nobody else has reported it. But I'll add it to my to-do list for things to investigate.

I do the same thing with all emulators and they open normally. In the case of ppsspp it only opens the game the first time when the emulator is closed, then when I run another game on the fronted it opens the game I was playing where I had stopped or if I closed the game it opens on the emulator home page. I tested it on a telephone device and the same thing happened. I tested others fronted devices on PEGASUS and DAISHISHO. they opened normally.

You need to exit the game completely, most (or maybe all?) emulators will not actually close the game when you swipe to close the app so the next game you launch from ES-DE will not be started as the old game was still running. In the case of PPSSPP I think you need to press back, then press "Exit to menu" and then "Exit".

My box art and videos etc are located with each system e.g. \ROMS\Arcade\images and \ROMS\Arcade\videos. when I start ES-DE it locates all of the games in teh specified games directory but it doesn't locate teh images and video. From what I can see ES-DE expects a dedicated media directory. is that correct and is there anyway to point to my games directory?

It's due to a bug in Android essentially, it starts ES-DE before the environment is ready, meaning the external storage has not been mounted yet. I have added a workaround for this that will come in the next release.

Yes it's possible in ES-DE but it would be incredibly tedious to setup and it's something I would definitely not recommend.

I've never used such a device so I'm not sure what double OS function means? Is it some kind of dual boot with Linux and Android? But like mentioned Android does not allow selection of the root of storage devices since a couple of years back. So if that other OS requires ROM files to be stored in the root of the storage device then it will unfortunately not work.

No it's not possible, I use the scoped storage directory picker that is part of the Android operating system and it does not support selection of the root of storage devices, I think Google introduced this limitation a couple of years back.

Yes it's all lowercase with ES-DE. Should be the same with the switch system, the only reason it still works is (I think) because Yuzu uses the FileProvider API instead of SAF URIs.

You should not need to rescrape anything when uninstalling and reinstalling ES-DE, the only thing that is deleted when you uninstall is your downloaded themes. It sounds like you have had your ES-DE directory (i.e. the application data directory) at two different locations with the previous installation and the new installation?

Well after an hr of digging, it was stalling at the transition from the front end to Retro Arch/ppsspp. Have it running on the Quest3 now (though Ive messed up the audio - will fresh install everything and tweak again). Brilliant.. Add Quest 3 to compatibility list 😁

This emulator has issues and needs to be updated before I can add it to ES-DE. There is a hell of a hack you could do to make games work as far as I've heard but it will only work on some devices and it's not something I've tested. There is a person in our Discord server that is attempting to get in contact with the developer to see if he can update it so it can work with ES-DE but I don't know when or if that could happen.

Nope that is all good. The q3 specs suggest it should work, decent snapdragon processor and plenty of ram, things like ppsspp work stand alone. Im not the best with tech, but this eve, i will have a dig through settings etc and see if i can get her to go. This would be epic, the Quest 2/3 community will go wild for this!!

We have found a bug in Android that could explain a lot of the issues, I'll document it in the FAQ soon but please try it. When you select the folder inside NetherSX2 where your ROMs are stored, make sure to "go back" all the way to the root of your storage device, then select the ROMs folder and the ps2 folder again. It seems like if the letter case has changed Android will not update the URI with the correct case unless you do it. We have just received reports from some people who have done this to successfully make some emulators work. Not sure if it help help in your case but you can try it. If this doesn't work please join our Discord server for more involved troubleshooting.

You probably need to use NetherSX2 instead of AetherSX2. If your controller doesn't work in RetroArch then please check with them as ES-DE does not configure emulators, it's only a frontend.

You're not scammed, some devices have issues because manufacturers have made customizations to the operating system and I need access to such devices to figure out exactly what they have done. It's not a general issue with Android 12. I can refund you manually.

I'm a bit hesitant to start adding hack systems and similar, because then we could end up with a huge amount of new systems which needs to be maintained and supported by the theme authors and so on. I normally make subdirectories for such games, like snes/MSU1.

Hi, yes I'm actually going to add the Geolith core now so it will be part of the next release. I'm not really fond of disabling game systems from the UI as the collections are virtual systems which point to the "real" game systems, and that is confusing if the real system is not there. It's like having playlists for your music but not being able to see the actual records that the playlists are built from. I think the Konami code is reasonable, but you should be able to modify the UIMode_passkey setting in ES-DE/settings/es_settings.xml to something else if you prefer it to be simpler. The on-screen help thing you mention is not a bug, to remove the black bar that normally hosts the helpsystem would require support for conditionals to be added to the theme engine and it's not been implemented. Maybe some day I'll do it as the theme developers have asked for it, but it's not as trivial as it may seem.

Here are some feature suggestions. 1. Support for the new RetroArch core geolith (NeoGeo). 2. Option to disable the Game Systems in the UI. Why? I sort my games into genre collections, so the start screen would be less cluttered if the systems cold be disabled. 3. Easier way to disable the kiosk mode, I know the Konami code is funny, never the less... :-) I noticed a bug, when the "display on-screen help" is disabled, it still shows the black stripe on the button. Thank you!

This will become possible with the next release which is coming soon. Well it's actually already possible but causes issues for some specific emulators. It's not a recommended setup though for various reasons, it makes the setup non-portable as a start and it's tedious to setup. I'll document it thoroughly before the release, both how to accomplish it and the drawbacks of this setup.

Does this work on Android phones? I have the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and I can't seem to get past the allow storage access stage. I enable it, go back, and the screen just flickers white and stays empty. Exiting and opening it again just starts the app from the intro page all over again and still asks for storage access while taking me to the permission page that shows it's already enabled. Android 13 btw.

I’m having an issue. If I turn off my Odin2 and leave it for a little while then turn it back on and open ES-DE it wants me to set it up again. If I press the back face button it loads normally. Did I install it wrong or is there something I need to do in order to fix that issue?

If Ayn fixes the problem then everything should be fine, it's the only device that we have come across that has these problems. They are not limited to ES-DE though, other frontends have the same problems on this device and I can also reproduce it when I use the "am" command from the command line. I own an Odin 2 myself and these issues are more annoyances than showstoppers though, most emulators still work after all.

So using the Retroid Pocket 4 for example on any emulator submenu in the interface the diagram shows that “back” is supposed to be set to the “right face button” which would correspond with “A” on the controller and “Select” is supposed to be set to the “bottom face button” which would correspond to “B” on the controller. Normally on a standard device like an Xbox controller A is typically the bottom face button and B is the right face button. I mapped the buttons the way they are positioned on the device itself. So when I press A or the right face button in the submenu for back it instead acts as select and B acts as back. Essentially the diagram on the submenu doesn’t match the input I set. Functionally I know I set A to select and B to back, but visually the interface is just not as clean with it displayed like that. It’s more of a nitpick with the odd way Ayn and Retroid have their buttons laid out and having the ES interface match it. X and Y are also switched from the standard which would normally be X as the left face button and Y as the top face button respectively. I can probably explain it better on discord with actual images? Also I meant to mention the native paste functionality doesn’t work with the built in ES keyboard. A lot of the game descriptions it parses for the scraper aren’t accurate from the sources it pulls from. So when I copy and paste a paragraph from say Wikipedia, I am unable to paste it into the text box on ES. A possible bug I’ve encountered as well is that when configuring the gamepad input, I am unable to “hold to skip” any options prior to the ABXY such as the view button?

Sorry I don't follow. I have an Odin 2 and I don't have any issues with the controls, could you let me know more precisely what is the problem? I suppose you did use the "Swap A/B and X/Y buttons" in the Input device settings menu? And you can set the audio volume for videos or disable the audio altogether in the Sound settings menu.

Glad to support this awesome project on Android. Some suggestions though. On devices like the Retroid Pocket 4 and Ayn Odin 2 where the XYAB aren’t in the usual configuration, if setting the front end controls to match the device buttons the positioning is off over what is displayed in the submenus. Secondly an option to silence the playing video media on the game selection screen would be much appreciated.

Yea, looks like i ran into the issue you are referring to where i use the custom system config entry and placed it into ES-DE/custom_systems to split the ROMs directories across multiple storage device on my Odin2. Whatever i try to modify on the es_system.xml file just could not get those standalone like DuckStation, AetherSX , PPSSPP and Dolphin to launch the games at all. Works on Daijisho though. I'll look into it, but setting ES-DE as the home app/launcher is not really officially supported. You can do it using third party apps but it's not something that has been thoroughly tested by me. I hope to be able to add proper official support for it though in a future release.

I had to open the developer settings and play with default USB behavior then it starts to work. I am not sure it is from the app or the os. I am using retriod pocket 4 pro with latest update.

I hope you consider making a walkaround to launch native apps and games from the Es itself by creating a shortcut somehow to open the packages like psvita. It is very important as if the application is set as a launcher it is a hassle to open any other apps or manipulate the files on device or play android games.

Yes..I seems to be a problem with Odin 2 only. Works great on my RP3+ and RP4pro...Odin 2 has all sorts of weird things happening (not just with ES-DE) that I don't experience with my other devices. But the bigger screen sure is nice.

Stock firmware, installed the same app on both devices to use as home launcher (Anyhome). Tried giving it the necessary permissions before starting the app, but it still freezes as soon as I open the app, and crashes not long after. Setting up the different amulator apps is the same on both devices, both devices has an sd card for rom storage.

Yes there are multiple locations in the menus where substantial work is performed, but that's unavoidable. Like if you switch themes the new theme needs to get loaded which can take a while on a slow device.

Oooo no it's set to Xbox which is the default in other apps but that might make sense - I'll try swapping it! For the menu performance - it 'feels' like there's some thread blocking occurring. I suspect perhaps an event such as reloading config / database or game list occurs synchronously when saving from within a sub-menu. If that's the case perhaps it could be performed async and potentially in the background while returning the user to the previous / main menu (could even show a little 'saving' text somewhere until the process completes).

Thanks for the info. Have you perhaps selected the SNES controller type in the Input device settings? This swaps the help icons as it's intended for third party SNES controllers where the button label don't match the actual button functions. Slow scraping is due to server speed limits and because ES-DE scrapes a lot more data than other frontends on Android, possibly multiple times more. As for optimizations I'm not sure what can be done, ES-DE is a relatively demanding application by its nature. I'm intending to do some renderer optimizations at some point but I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make.

Make sure you have installed the latest version from the RetroArch website because the one from the Play store doesn't work with ES-DE on some devices. Also make sure you don't have multiple RetroArch versions installed as ES-DE checks for all of them in a certain order and it could be that the wrong one is launched. You can check in ES-DE/logs/es_log.txt for more details. And applying debug mode in the Other settings menu will provide even more info on game launch.

i dont think that this is the issue. For example, i set bsnes for snes games on ES-DE and also bsnes on the retroarch plus but it is not working. I double-checked all the cores to be the same on both ES-DE and retroarch plus with no luck.

Probably es-de tells RetroArch to use a non installed core. Install those cores or (better) change default cores in es-de settings

Great work, but i have a problem, retroarch is crashing when i launch any game (gba, gb, dos, dreamcast etc.). On the other hand, Daijisho runs great with the same settings. I have android 11 and my roms are in sd card. any idea what is happening?

Confirming 3.0.0-15 works on the Anbernic RG405V. It's very slow when launching the app and changing settings in the sub-menus is very laggy but hey - it works! Well done folks. Feel free to request me to test and report back on anything if it helps. Note that the button mappings shown in the game lists are all incorrect, for example they show that you press X to favourite a game, but pressing X actually shows the preview video full screen and pressing Y adds it to favourites. It's great to finally have something that has the potential of replacing the very poorly maintained Daijishou - it had so much potential but was hampered by not being open source + having a single developer. In comparison ES-DE offers the promise of more features, customisation and hopefully faster development. The trade off (all be it during beta/alpha at present) is obviously performance in the menus and much slower scraping.

I'm sorry to hear that, it seems to be a very unusual problem but a few persons have reported similar issues. I'm trying to figure out what could cause it but I've not been able to reproduce it yet. Are you using the stock firmware/OS image? Any other difference between this and your Odin when it comes to settings or some special apps or whatnot? Have you set ES-DE as the home app/launcher on either of these two devices? The problem is likely caused by ES-DE not being able to save its settings to internal storage, although that's just a qualified guess at this moment in time.

Make sure to ask for a refund from Amazon, then uninstall ES-DE and the Amazon Appstore app (unless you need it for something else). This will not delete your scraped media or settings, you just need to download the themes again. Then download and install the APK, it's the exact same release. I missed AmberELEC after I upgraded from an Anbernic to a Retroid Pocket 3+, particularly custom collections which seemed to be missing in Daijishou and such for Android. Saw the RetroGameCorps video and the menu similarities to ELEC and immediately paid for this. Worth it. (I do wish it were easier to add games to custom collections though. It was horribly confusing trying to do that. I'd expect the game menu to have an option to select to add to any custom collection, not just favorites. Going to the collection, setting to edit it, then going back to find the game, add it, then go back to turn off editing that collection is... a lot.)

You can already place game directories on different storage devices but it's very tedious and not recommended. And there is an issue that makes some emulators not work with this setup. This has been fixed though and will be included in the next release. But regardless it will never be recommended, I will write documentation that explains why this is the case but how to accomplish it if you insist on this setup anyway.

No I consider this a bug in Android, when you set ES-DE as your home app Android will start ES-DE before it has mounted the external storage such as the SD card. This is why the configurator is shown. Just press back when it's displayed and ES-DE should start normally (you may have to wait a second so the storage is really mounted first). You will not lose any settings. I have added a workaround for this issue that will come in the next release, where I check for the storage mount status up to 30 times with 100 milliseconds between each loop iteration. That seems to eliminate the problem on my Odin 2 at least.

I honestly have no idea if we'll ever get anything from Amazon. I strongly doubt it as they (incorrectly of course) state that it's an illegal app. But I have never been in this situation before so I simply don't know what will happen. And yes the Google Play store track is not something we will continue to pursue, at least not for the time being. Things may change, Google may introduce new policies and so on, and maybe then it's worth making another attempt, but definitely not right now.

You can actually do it already although it's a bit tedious. There is one bug though that I have fixed but not rolled out in a release yet that makes some emulators fail if you split your game system directories. When I make that release I'll update the documentation with how to set it up. But it's again not recommended for reasons I will explain when I write the documentation.

Older releases possibly too but then the application will be crippled and not offer full functionality as some libraries ES-DE depends on don't work properly in anything older than Android 10. Thank you so much for bringing EmulationStation to Android. I've tried all the others and ES is still the easiest option, particularly for large libraries. A small UI bug I noticed is that when I choose SNES controller type, the select and start button on the UI is correct, but the image for the dpad buttons at the bottom of the UI is not correct. The UI says I should press the bottom Dpad button to select, when it is infact the right Dpad button to select when using SNES controller.

i cancel my membership and there says access expire in one month... Can I access this page and application updates even after a month? I am a new user and I have never used this service before.

He says right on the Patron that you only need to sub for a single month for all the updates. I don't think he plans on doing a bait-and-switch.

I believe he won't as he need to keep people buying the membership. If it leaked "and it will", it would be no interest to buy memberships anymore for a lot of people. even the future updates still would be tricky to distribute.

You can unistall your amazon one and then install the apk. You will retain your settings, but you will need to go through the initial config config (to give the app access to android), butyou can skip the last step (creating system folders)

Uninstall Amazon version first (your files, folder structure and scraped files are intact). Reinstall once complete and you’ll just have to reconfigure your themes and any custom UI settings you had applied.

Should it automatically overwrite the amazon version? I'm getting a lot of 'app not installed' when I try. size is 117mb which seems reasonable? On the offchance that it is an issue, would deleting the app mean I need to set up from scratch? The set up is probably easy, it's all the scraping (although I assume those files won't get touched anyway)

Like I mentioned in the post the web server is unfortunately a little bit unreliable so sometimes you don't get the whole file, especially now when so many people are downloading it at the same time. I'll try to find a better place to host the file shortly, it's just been a bit too crazy today. Try to re-download it again, it should work eventually.
