Patton (1970) - Full Reaction

What an interesting fellow. I liked how he was unapologetically himself, he knew his weaknesses and so did we but I found myself rooting for him anyways. It was different seeing the perspective from the command centers vs the infantry or the troops on the ground. George Patton, I'm glad to know part of your story.

Patton (1970) - Full Reaction

I am a veteran and was a tank commander. My uncle was a tank crewman/mechanic in Patton's army. He didn't speak much about it, but you could tell he was proud to have served under Patton. As to the introductory speech, it's a military assembly. They come to attention then take seats. Normally, the audience would have come to attention before the general left, but in either instance, applause was not appropriate. There's debate about the reality of this movie. I believe most it was true as Hollywood could make it. Of course they had to add effects, drama, etc. But there's a lot to a war, especially a big war like WWII. My personal opinion is that this is a great testament to Patton and the men who served under him. I was stationed on the East/West German Border (the REAL Iron Curtain). I can attest to the fact that Germany in the winter is no party. Cold weather injuries and equipment malfunctions were a common occurrence. That is why tankers have so much respect for Patton moving his army 100 miles to liberate Bastogne. There had to be divine intervention. Now, on the other hand, you really must see the light-hearted, comedy/drama Kelly's Heroes. It stars Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, and an all star cast. It's they story about a unit with a few days off going behind German lines to rob a bank. Of course it goes off the rails and things go wrong, but you'll love the ending. Being a former tank commander Kelly's Heroes is my all time favorite movie. Be well, Greg https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065938/

A number of years later, George C. Scott would reprise his role as General George S. Patton in the 1986 movie 'The Last Days of Patton'.

If you're interested, you should check out the movie 'MacArthur' (1977), another movie about another larger-than-life WWII general, this time with award-winning actor Gregory Peck as General Douglas MacArthur.

so many congratulations, amazing!

I wonder what Patton would do with Oddball (and his crew). I can see Oddball telling Patton that he is drinking some wine, eating some cheese and catching some rays!

Happy birthday to the Army! Still hoping you choose Kelly's Heroes with Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland sometime in the future. That was my dad's favorite war movie. He liked this one too. I like Patton having been in a tank company in the 1st Cavalry. We learned a lot about General Patton as his tank doctrines are still taught today. Cheers!

Looking forward to seeing this when I'm back from vacation, (40th anniversary).
