The Birdcage is one of those culturally significant motion pictures that WILL win a Patreon poll and millions of people have enjoyed the motion picture just fine without knowing anything about it's background or it's storyline, but knowing something about how a French stage play that was intentionally requested of a well known gay actor/playwright ended up on Broadway featuring a Tony Award winning book(script) by Harvey Fierstein (Mrs Doubfire, Independence Day) to eventually becoming one of director Mike Nichols' and actor Robin Williams' most successful and beloved motion pictures does significantly heighten your appreciation for the film and why it is still 30 years later, as of 2026, the #2 top grossing LGBTQ motion picture of all time.

2025-08-04 07:55:57 +0000 UTCTaxi Driver is probably not ever going to win a Patreon poll but it is absolutely one of those "culturally significant" motion pictures that suddenly make other motion pictures that reference it, and that WILL win a Patreon poll, suddenly make sense, not to mention it's historical significance as the motion picture that was the genesis of John Henkley Jr's obsession with Jodie Foster that led him to be standing on a sidewalk outside of a hotel in Washington DC one afternoon lying in wait as President Ronald Reagan and several of his advisers left an event putting them all within near fatal range of Henkley's concealed handgun.
