The Jimquisition: Active-Time Prattle

A defense of ATB and turn-based combat.

Hah, we are currently working on a turn-based JRPG inspired by the older Final Fantasy games. If you're interested, we have a devlog on tigsource. https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=49099.0

I like turn-based combat...it's the random encounters that I can't stand.

Also, just like any other long standing game series... When unfavorable changes are made, but people continue to buy new installments and even *gasp* compliment them for those changes... Doesn't that compound the problem? Square is bad. I am not even trying to argue that. But aren't we partially responsible for ^that predicament? Vote with your wallets and all that?

Where do we draw a comfortable line? Look at games like Xenoblade, or maybe the Tales series.... Apples and oranges sure... But both are critical success stories that people fanboy out over (I haven't taken XCX out of my Wii U for a week now), and I wonder if this doesn't also influence the decisions that bottom-line-driven companies like Squeenix make?

Bravely Default is bloody brilliant, that was how you modernize the classic JRPG Combat. They made some very smart moves there, like the control they gave you over the Random Battles - they where often way to frequent and could be very annoying in the old Days. BD fixed that problem and many else.
