First off, the hill people came down to spy on the 'ship people' so they were hiding in the bushes and heard Mal call Simon 'Doctor'. They were leaving when a Grange brother heard the bushes rustle and hence the Shepherd asking, "Seem a mite jumpy to you?" I read somewhere that the Jayne scene, looting Simon's stuff, was ad-libbed by Adam. They needed to fill a minute. Really??? Usually shows are being cut down for time. My bigger point: 20:18 to 22:02 and later 36:36 to 37:57 Don't Mom and Dad (and later just Dad) seem a bit sus when they're talking to Simon? My hare-brained theory (supported by some Browncoats but not all) is that Mr. (and Mrs.) Tam 'sold' River to the government for a LOT of money and kept Simon out of the loop. I think they 'saw' something about River that scared them (her uncanny 'intuition') and when the government was looking for 'special' individuals, they saw a way to get her gone without rousing Simon's suspicions - or River's! An academy with the most interesting programs for learning? Of course River wanted to go. Later, when Simon got a letter that made no sense, his parents tried unsuccessfully to convince Simon it was basically nothing to worry about; but Simon is far smarter than his parents. He obviously gets her out with, as he says in ep1, "money... and - and luck." They sold River down the river, as it were. But Simon is, "...very smart. ...Gifted is the term." and River is, "...more than gifted... She was a gift." His love for his sister transcends his own needs. Even though you have finished this show SoFie, I did not use any spoilers here, just in case a first-timer might be reading. My theory is just that - a theory, formed by hypotheses plus my own deductions and opinions. Oh I do tend to turn comments into novellas, don't I? ;P 42:20 Yes! When River said something like, "Daddy will come to take us home," she was TOTALLY referring to Mal and just then when she said, "Time to go," she knew they were back on Jiangyin. A bunch of "Big damn heroes, sir!" Final edit lol: You are probably the only creator I have seen notice when River takes Jayne's bread at the end! There are even a few Browncoats who have missed that until it was pointed out (like me -eyeroll- lol). I have another theory regarding Jayne and River but I won't delve into that here unless I am asked - it's rather unpopular... SoFie I love your reaction as always! : )

It was Zac Efron! He actually looks so much like Simon in this episode!!

Madeleine Howard

Perhaps someone has already mentioned this to you, but between the show ending and the movie Serenity, there were web videos released as a viral marketing campaign called "The River Tam Sessions" which I hope you'll consider reacting to as well - I think there is a compilation of them on YouTube

There are resources online that give you the Mandarin translations for each episode. In this one, River called Mal the son of a drooling wh*re and monkey, lol.

Thank you sweetheart. I appreciate it so much 💜

Gosh I love your reactions, SoFie. You’re so in tune with character, so emotionally intuitive and incisive, and so open to humor and fun. You’re just consistently one of my favorite reactors over time. Thank you for all your efforts and everything you put out there. 💖

This episode pretty much confirmed what I suspected: That a lot of the Chinese-language dialogue is a replacement for curse words. There are two instances this episode where a character speaks Chinese, and another character tells them to stop cursing. This would explain why the Chinese is never translated. Considering the Fox network didn't allow cursing, this was a pretty clever workaround. And you were right, that was Zac Efron as young Simon.
