March 2016 (Kind Of) Patroncast!

April's Patroncast will DEFINITELY happen in April. Also, I'm very interested to hear your reactions to the Fallout discussion in this part - enjoy!

Jon

Hey Jon if by any fat chance you actually come to Australia someday please allow me to buy a beer for you! Also with regards to spiders there are indeed a lot in Oz. I just got two huntsman settled in my letterbox - not sure why but they'll come back even if removed. Huntsman spiders are VERY COMMON in Australia but they are extremely timid. I would say the chance of getting bitten by a spider in cities - like Sydney or Melbourne - is very remote. So no worries eh!

NerdyChuning

Any chance of the podcasts being put up as mp3s? Or are they already some where and I'm just dim?

Ian Dodds

I know I'm a bit late responding to this, but I've had the same thing happen. Additionally, I know a few women (myself included) who go gender-neutral or actively mark our genders as male online, just because it honestly makes it a bit easier to hang out in gaming forums and the like. The fact that I have a gender-neutral given name does help with this as well, of course.

Jan Bednarczuk

Also do you see yourself only doing Fallout 4 YOLO and or KE once all the DLC's are out?

Brandon Langmeier

This might not be the best place to ask, but Jon do you see Red revenue going down as the opening period of people using one month trials expires? I haven't activated mine, but I know many friends who have and don't see themselves renewing.

Brandon Langmeier

Hey Jon did you notice Bethesda Softworks mentioned you on Twitter? They posted a link to a GamesRant article that was talking about your YOLO successes. That's pretty darn cool.

Steven Fraser

Jon, when did you start making the Zelda sound when you get something you like? I only noticed it this week. It's hilarious.

Todd Westcott

Hello Jon! I'd look into Dolphin (Gamecube and Wii emulator) if you want to do any Gamecube games. It's easy to set up, can use an Xbox 360 controller and will upscale pretty well with your rig.

James Busch

Hey Jon, yours is the first channel i've ever supported on patreon. I love all your videos and watch one daily if not every other day. /signed one of your rabble rousing cousins across the pond

SageNOLA

I think, you get it wrong: if you ever do settlers, just tell me WHEN))) but we can play even not on video, it's totally up to you. Hell, I'm so much looking forward to it. =)

Sergey

Another hurdle for me wanting to start is that I have no clue how to edit videos and my laptop is slowly dying I think and I can't afford getting all the equipment to make videos where the quality is tolerable.

Marvin Dominguez

Thanks for answering! I do have to agree we Yanks do like the British accent... I have no particular reason why... Both my girlfriend and I watch a fair number of British YouTube folks. In her case so much that Google often wants to peg her as a Brit, but she loves her British makeup people. Cultural references can definitely get lost going both ways, but there is so much spread of American TV movies etc abroad it's probably less likely to be lost going the other way.

Torgofjungle

We have big spiders, but they're not the ones you have to worry about - don't annoy them and they won't get you, or even if they do, the worst you'll get is an infection (like from any dirty animal bite). White-tails, redbacks and funnel-webs (all highly poisonous) are all easily catchable in a glass, but I wouldn't recommend getting close. I'm an arachnophobe, so I usally just scream until someone else comes to help.

Keagan Wyatt

Australia, you say? Depends - how big are the spiders? Because I like my spiders small and easily catchable in a small glass.

For Aristophanes, I tend to read him the opposite - rather than an urge to stop taking things seriously, I think he uses the farcical to shine a light and urge real action - as Dikaeapolis in Acharnians says 'Comedy knows justice too'. The Frogs is the best example of that, and the most heart-breaking, because you can see in the farce the underlying reality - Athens is on its knees. What we're doing isn't working. If things don't change, we're going to lose. Please change. Refind some of that old zeal and fire that's in the plays of Aeschlus. Or we're going to die. Lysistrata, for me, is like the Birds, an Escapist play, and the reality under it is the message that 'war is shit'. War's not bad, or evil, or unjustified, but it's shit, and wouldn't peace be awesome? But Lysistrata, like Acharnians, doesn't provide much direct advice how to get to peace, maybe because Aristophanes knows there can't be peace. The war is just there. It's the villain in the background. It's only at the end of the war, with defeat close, that we get to Frogs, and Aristophanes stops focusing on how great peace is, and instead begs for change. The Frogs is beautiful and hilarious, but in its historical context, it's a tragedy too.

I've long toyed with Legion ending for Kill Everything v2 - I think I have a good solution planned...

Many A True Nerd

I've been sketching it out these last two days. I'm 95% sure there's a series I'm happy with in here...

Many A True Nerd

Very true - the huge post-Fallout 3 KE was US Kotaku-led - around 7,000 subscribers at a time when that was a massive shift.

Many A True Nerd

I'm fine for now :) Survival is certainly time consuming, so I expect less double video days in general for the time being.

Many A True Nerd

Ha, I'm teaching myself to mod right now - I'll get comfortable with that before showcasing, I reckon!

Many A True Nerd

<3

Many A True Nerd

Seriously, go watch my earliest videos - they're so muted and awkward! It's a fun way to practice speaking and beig confident, even just as an odd hobby :)

Many A True Nerd

Sadly I can't see Patreon demographics - though like the wider community it feels more than the 6% female that YouTube leads me to believe. Our viewing figures are indeed quite high in general - often, only 10% of a community is active, and we're much more like 15-30%

Many A True Nerd

The US thing is interesting - on the one hand, I've experienced that US folks often seem to like UK accents (I worked in LA for a bit - people there LOVED the accent), and the British humour can work well for the US, though there's the issue that sometimes British sarcasm can get lost for some US folks, and our cultural references can be meaningless. It could go both ways, but often gets decided when YouTube decides that UK YouTubers should be suggested primarily to UK viewers - YouTube kind of segregates by country.

Many A True Nerd

Oh, we're good for hardware - the Elgato HD Pro 60 I use for capturing is fine for streaming too.

Many A True Nerd

Intriguing - this would explain the discrepancy between what I see, and what Google says.

Many A True Nerd

I'm strongly expecting No Guns to be done before Far Harbor comes out - No Guns probably only has 4 or 5 parts left, I reckon. As for YOLO, we'll do it properly - probably using mods to remove the heal on Level-Up for example - and removing all healing effects from all food so I can still use them for hunger and bonuses. And for conventions, I wander around every EGX and EGX Rezzed - somebody even spoke to me at the recent one!

Many A True Nerd

In my experience, what YouTube channels generally do is get little spikes, and then settle at a new better normal rate - we're currently experiencing a spike, so you can't assume that will always continue - things will likely settle down a bit yet - for 500,000 this year, we'd need a massive step-up above even what we've see in April.

Many A True Nerd

I enjoyed it, and I thought it was a good couple of videos too - I was actually a little disappointed with how it did on the channel, but it's just one of those things - SimCity 4 did vastly better than I expected, and this did worse.

Many A True Nerd

Ha, if I ever do Settlers on the channel, you have my word I'll ask if you want to be involved :)

Many A True Nerd

Hey! do you want to play in settlers of catan with a real nerd? I even got to the Russia's national championship in that game. I didn't play for a while, but I'd love to compete with you) You gotta take the challenge and show me who is the True Nerd)) my mail is sergeyonenko@mail.ru - write me if you want to play together.

Sergey

Hey, Jon! Thanks for this patroncast. It is very entertaining.

Denis K.

I would love to see a continuation of the Hand of fate series, It really suits your play style and its a cracking game as well. Keep up the amazing videos!

Richard Muscroft

May 2nd or bust.

Zack

I have to comment one more time. I have been sceptical about your predictions in how far your channel can grow this year. But given the recent publicity you are getting after completing FO3 YOLO, I now see that those 500k by the end of the year is possible. https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/manyatruenerd/futureprojections

Yuri1cz

anyone taking bets yet on if the April one will actually happen in April? Congrats on finishing Fallout 3 Yolo i cant wait to see fallout 4 Yolo.

Bubbamax77

(Oh wow, for me on Firefox this comment looks terrible, I did put lots of spacing in it but for some reason it's all squished in to one ugly paragraph hopefully it's just my computer or Firefox being weird) I've never really cared for podcasts or anything like that but I really like these so far, perhaps it's just because it's engaging the audience a lot. Anyway as for the Fallout discussion from what I remember(it was like an hour ago for me) I think you should definitely try beat Fallout 4 on Survival, the base game at least. Successful or not it would be a nice taster of YOLO. By that point No Guns might be finished so you'll probably be checking out Far Harbor, maybe you could do YOLO after it? Also I guess you could adjust the rule set slightly, rather than no healing considering you could die at any moment allow healing, so it's kind of like the BioShock run where you ultimately "died" when your money run out. I feel like if you're going to allow healing there needs to be some sort of rules to it though. Something evil like no crafting or cooking maybe no doctors either. That would definitely up the challenge while allowing you to heal, with only what you find in the world. Would also like to say that as much as I love the Fallout content, it being my favourite game series ever, the other stuff you do is definitely just as fun. If I ever manage to go at a convention or something I will probably ask you put the fascist line on a cup or something if you were signing stuff. That would be glorious.

Steven Fraser

I have had the same thing happen to me... It assumed I was male because I guess video games, technology, and science are 'boys' fields.

Kat M

You may have more people showing up as male because of the way Google makes a guess for gender based on browsing habits. I don't know if Youtube draws from this same data, but I know that Google assumes that I'm a male under Google ad settings when I am not.

Chloe Wilson

About the demographics thing: My wife and I watch you together. Watching the new Fallout YOLO episode is a Sunday staple for us! But it usually gets loaded through my phone to the Chromecast, so I guess I get "credit" for watching the video when really its one man, one female, and three cats watching.

Sara! Anne Frazier

I wish I was in the UK, I'd lend you some gear for twitch video capture... :) Also: yey, Skilines! :D

nagi

My thought on your new Sunday more relaxed fallout play through? Fallout New Vegas: Long Lost Legion. A legion play through where you kill everyone except legion and do your best to be a sneaky sabotage agent for Caesar. Just a thought. Thanks for all the work you do.

Mike Waraksa

We're 6%! We're 6%!

Allison Otting

Another person here who found your channel through Kotaku. I actually find it odd that British you tubers wouldn't have large American audiences as their are a large number of Americans who enjoy the British sense of humor. That said I think a new vegas kill everything run remastered would be the way to go as it would be a little bit lighter faire and you already know the heck out of some new vegas so the prep time would be less. Also your city of lights videos, while perhaps not amongst the most viewed. Are an excellent example of why I love this channel. That's a game that I would have never played or probably ever heard of but loved watching you play through it. Congrats on finish fallout 3 YOLO, also let me be the billionth person to recommend Cities Sykylines. The true sequel to Sim City 4

Torgofjungle

Congratulations on finishing Fallout 3 Yolo, I knew you could do it. Hard to think about what type of run you could do next but I'm glad to see you returning to New Vegas at least, I'm sure whatever it is you end up choosing to do will be very entertaining. I would love to see you do more games like Sim City, that mini series was very enjoyable and it is making me want to go and play Cities Skylines now.

David Marsden

Jon, first congrats on finishing FO3 YOLO.. it was a terrifying episode as you seemed to become increasing cavalier! You got a good plug on Eurogamer yesterday. I found your discussion on the demographics interesting. I was wondering if the demographics of Patreon supporters are any different… do you have access to this? Also, in terms of the YouTube subs would be interesting to know the attachment rate of first time views translating into subs. Conversely do you see the percentage of subs who are “active” viewers. Aside from the final episode of FO3 YOLO it seems like the views were around 50-60k on average [finale at +90k now] vs > 170k subs. Was wondering if this is a good conversion rate or not as it seems pretty high. In terms of what to do next aside from more Fallout… I agree more simulations/strategy… I would never play most of these myself but watching/listening to you play is very entertaining… Bridge Simulator... don't need to say more.

AlexR

Maybe doing a youtube channel will help you become more talkative (if that's what you want, I mean)? Pratice really helps, and youtube is a type of practice. Jon mentioned that he didn't always sound great in the beginning, but got better with time; I bet you can do it, too!

Erin Trickett

For an answer to your question check out the (Sort of ) Feb Patroncast but remember to keep it under your hat! :)

AlexR

I found your channel after seeming an article about you finishing vanilla FONV YOLO. You've made me consider starting YouTube/twitch but I don't think it's going to happen because my mood generally is pretty low plus I have a bit of a lisp, and I'm not very talkative almost all the time because socially I'm somewhat reclusive. Your videos are one of the few highlights of things I have to look forward to these days, even when I'm is a bum mood you can make me laugh or at least smirk. What I'm saying is thank you for being who you are and I'm glad I can experience something that is a genuine labor of love. P.S What is the relationship between you and Claire?

Marvin Dominguez

Jon, just keep in mind that we love you. Your channel today brings me more joy that most high-budget movies that hollywood shoots. I'm so happy you don't have to work now. Keep doing the good job.

Sergey

One of the most obvious games for you to play next would probably be the original Fallout (and/or Fallout 2). They're not very stressful since they're turn-based, but they would still provide a challenge and thus be exciting enough to deserve their own series.

Richard Jansson

Yeah, the Kotaku articles brought me (also American) to MATN too, but it's your videos that keep me coming back! I'd love to see you showcase some mods in New Vegas, I think that would be fun. Don't rush the new Kill Everything run. That said, I won't complain if that's what you go with!

Jason Ross

I was talking with some friends of mine just today about how long it must take you to record survival! Maybe a less intensive series for Sunday would be best for Sunday until survival winds down? Hopefully you are able to get enough mini breaks throughout the day that you don't feel run down by YouTube, especially seeing as you've been doing double videos quite a bit lately.

Amy Mo

Regarding why you have so many folks from the United States: a ton of people found the channel through Kotaku articles, myself included. Although those articles were eventually republished by Kotaku UK, the initial US flood probably came from that as well as Reddit.

Keegan Clements-Housser

Jon, have fun! Do the Kill Everything. You know NV so well you will come up with the worst evilest ways to deal with things. There is still the DLC so there are new things to see and do.

Omar Pantoja

Jon your intro has definitely gotten more standardized and uniformly enthusiastic as well as more confident. I re-watched NV No Kill recently and you can tell you were new and kinda finding your voice as a narrator.

Zack

Would it be possible to do the Legion ending in your next run of FO:NV? I think you have never done it on your channel.

Yuri1cz

First, congrats on finishing FO 3 YOLO!!! I'm happy for whatever type of Sunday video you do next, but you have done a lot of survival-style play recently. Maybe some mods instead? Although I hear Dust is so unforgiving, it would only be a few episodes, lol. How about some one-shot, easy mods to showcase until No Guns is done? I especially loved the April Fool's video, but I have a bone to pick with you about Magnetic: Cage Closed...you mentioned the game was easy enough, and it wasn't a critique-off on Aristophanes' Lysistrata. I challenge you to a minor-critique-off! See the end of the comment for it, since it's even more of a text dump. I would have KILLED to study Classics at Oxford...we used their recommended language books in Latin. I came here thanks to the Kotaku review of your kill everything FO 3 run. I stayed for the good times, and you have a good balance of commentary and jokes that never feels aggressive towards women (or men). I guess the problem I see with getting my female friends involved in your channel is that they aren't hardcore gamers and aren't as interested in longer gaming videos. The guys watch you already, lol, along with the We Broke series! Sorry to be such a chatty lady, everyone ;) Modern feminist critics enjoy hailing Lysistrata as Aristophanes' as well as Ancient Greeks' most pro-women play. I tend to disagree, simply because of how often the women consider themselves to be mischievous or bad. One could argue that, being a satire, these women are joking about the concepts seen in plays demonizing them, but I think it's meant as a joke that's to be taken as real. I prefer Thesmophoriazusae as the more pro-women piece, as the councilwomen are shown as capable of running a democracy as men of Athens do. It also addresses the grevencies of how women are viewed in popular plays of the time (although I think part of Aristophanes' message there is 'Stop taking it so seriously.'). What do you think?

Erin Trickett

Well, I guess I'm one of your outliers then - 27-year-old Aussie female. I have no idea why you don't have more female viewers, I've never had an issue with any of your humour or anything like that. I think the fact you have a Classics degree from Oxford is fantastic and anyone giving you crap about it is an idiot - or possibly just jealous. Watching you play Ryse and ripping it apart historically or translating the Legion's Latin without thinking too hard about it is one of the best parts of watching your videos (I wish you'd do more of the sort of thing you did with Ryse, really). As for things like LA Noire - have you thought about Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments... or maybe Heavy Rain (if you're willing to step around the plotholes)? Also, don't go to the US - come to Australia! (and weep at our totally inadequate internet)

Keagan Wyatt

I recently began playing Fallout 4: No Armor on Survival difficulty (PS4). No damage resistance allowed! Perhaps you'll want to try a No Armor run at some point :) At level 8, I'm 2-for-5 killing legendary enemies on my first attempt (sooo many deaths... also, mines... lots of mines). And I've had 3 miserable armor drops and a miserable Sentinel's Lead Pipe drop, but also a nice Explosive 10mm drop. I've never even played Very Hard, previously, but your Survival Mode series has motivated me to prepare for what's to come :)

Eric Place

Horray for more cooking!

Lindsay Chojecki

US doesn't have the 1st, 2.1, 2.2 ... system. Our nearest equivalent would be summa cum laude, magna cum laude , cum laude, and regular (without honors).

Kurt Mueller

I do love the fallout content it would be cool to see you do some sort of special run in skyrim or even redo red faction in a special run look forward to see what you do next in fallout tho good luck.

Chris

i'll watch whatever fallout is next. Honestly from a critical POV it'd be really interesting to see a Kill everything reboot, the first was great fun but you've clearly got better since. But I'd also like to see some mods, I've heard whispers but never looked very closely. Time splitters 2! They don't make them like they used to. Think I might go dig out my GameCube.

George Morgan

Have you been keeping an eye on the development of Stellaris, and would you consider playing it? It's developed by the guys who made Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis, except it's set in space and has potential galaxy destroying science development,
