An update on Sales Tax

Hello patrons!

This is Claire, coming to you with some fun tax information 🤓

From July 1st 2020, Patreon will have to start charging sales tax on pledges from patrons in certain countries and US states. This change should affect a little under half of our patrons (you can check the full list here).

This is a legal requirement that Patreon is fulfilling, and unfortunately it’s not possible for MATN to assume those charges ourselves - we checked. The good news is that, unlike VAT, sales tax doesn’t always apply to your whole pledge amount, because some of the benefits that you receive as a patron might not be taxable at all.

We've been working with Patreon to make sure that you don’t get charged more than you should be. We know that most of you are mainly here to provide support for us making videos (fortunately, that isn't taxable in most places!), so we’ve updated the backend of our page to reflect that. This is all background stuff, of course, we’re not changing anything about the perks themselves; your benefits aren’t going anywhere. 😄

This all depends on where you’re based, but for most of you there will be either no change or a very minimal change because sales tax will only be applied to a tiny portion of your pledge.

I hope this helps, we just wanted to let you know what’s going on, and what you can expect. If you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them, with the caveat that taxes are complicated and I might not know the rules for your specific country.
