It's taken me forever to figure it out and make it happen since I posted this demo on YouTube more than a year ago. As you can see, the video concept has come a long way since that demo.
In the beginning, I tried very hard to make the morphing thing work. I tested it for maybe two months, but the results weren't very cinematic, they felt gimmicky. So then I moved on to background design, and after I got wind that it was going to be possible to create your own avatars using AI and then animate them using a video of yourself as a guide, I focused on coming up with a workflow that would allow me to generate the avatars in a way that I could then put them over my backgrounds and color and light them properly. It was actually a fun challenge, like building a real clock.
I chose 8 pictures of different ages in my life, 5, 22, 25, 32, 36, 38, 47, and then a video I took a month ago when I turned 57. When we first saw the finished shot of the animated 32-year-old version of myself, we were in awe. And the kid... well. It's a lot. But I think it makes sense for the song to be like this.
