My computer has crashed and possibly died forever
Added 2021-11-26 04:27:50 +0000 UTCAll right, so right as I was trying to get back into a positive mindset my fucking computer died. I can no longer see the chapter I spent the last week working on, may need a new computer, and am kind of panic attacking right now. I have spent the last hour troubleshooting everything I could think of, but unfortunately the computer will simply no longer turn on. I am hoping that somehow a miracle happens, and tomorrow the computer just turns on normally, but odds are that I will either need to repair or completely replace the computer.
This also means that the files for the last chapter are possible gone, or at least not in a state where I can recover them and finish editing in time for tomorrow's chapter. I am really, really sorry, but I am probably not going to be able to post tomorrow's chapter on time. I will get back to rewriting and editing it whenever I have a working computer, and don't need to type on a borrowed computer or my phone where Autocorrect 'corrects' words to totally wrong ones half the time and I can't have my Status Screens pulled up to the side in order to double check everything.
I will get the next chapter up whenever I have a working computer. Sorry if this post is kind of rambley or nonsensical - I have spent about an hour panicking and trying totally random shit to see if it somehow works. The bright side is that I have the Status Screens saved on a seperate storage, and I also use that to save chapters of this story - unfortunately, I only update these once per chapter. in short, I might be losing this week's worth of writing, but at least I still have all of my setting and worldbuilding notes, and Status Screens, and whatnot. I will just lose the updates which would have occured this chapter.
I deeply apologize needing to delay this chapter for an unknown length of time. I had to delay another chapter within the last few months and I missed another one. T_T. I'll try to get my computer repaired / replaced as soon as possible to keep everything moving.
For those of you that celebrate it, Happy Thanksgiving. I hope your holiday is going better than mine. For those of you that don't celebrate Thanksgiving, uhh... Happy arbitrary date in Novemeber, I guess.
For those concerned about specific word choice of Perks last chapter, I will rework the word choice a bit to make what the more important Perks in the chapter do clearer. [Safety Analysis] is supposed to be fairly powerful, so I will make it clearer what conditions are needed for it to function. Regarding the other Perk of contention in said chapter, I am used to people complaining anytime people have Alice choose a Perk, so I felt a need to justify her choices a bit even when I feel that something is fairly useful from a character and story perspective. However, I can see how that compulsion might be dragging down some of her Perk choice - I will take another look at it when I can actually look at my story without using a fucking phone.
My apologies for language, but I am more than slightly stressed and frustrated right now. But I still want to be clear about what is happening on my end when things go wrong, thus super stressed acaswell doing post-writing even while things are crashing and burning and on fire. (Thankfully not literally)

I think it's a pretty common feeling, but at least from my perspective this is a not uncommon thing for authors - you just can't always rush it, even if you want to.

Intellectually, at least, I do feel that I am notably better than some authors that just disappear into the abyss forever, taking a story I was enjoying reading along with them. Emotionally, however, my brain just doesn't seem to accept this explanation. Idk. In any case, I hope you, and everyone else, is having a lovely week. :)

Hardware... my Dex stat is probably like, half that of a normal human being's. I do not excel in Hardware. Hardware is suffering.

I lost one week of status screen updates, a few Perk ideas and such, and a few other minor things, but not the end of the world. I was more frustrated at the timing, because the feeling of writing 'no chapter this week' the day before/day of my usual release feels pretty bad, and if it had happened a few days earlier I would not have lost so much progress, and may have been able to get everything together anyway. Thus, I felt more than a little frustrated at the time of original message composition.

2021-12-04 05:26:18 +0000 UTCHey, on further reflection, it's much better than last thanksgiving where my family drove my father to the hospital and I got to sit in a car waiting to hear if my father was still alive because only one person was allowed inside at a time. While this was more in the 'frustrating' realm than the 'horror/fear/holysheet' category, I consider this year's Thanksgiving catastrophe to be quite the step up, upon further reflection. Computers can be replaced unlike people.

2021-12-04 05:24:53 +0000 UTCMy old computer seems to have experienced a freak accident of the power supply dying (what I figured broke) and some internal OTHER stuff died (at the same time, because life just disapproves sometimes, I guess). My new computer is up and running (self-built) but it will not detect the GPU. GPU works fine in other computer. If you have ieas on that, I would actually appreciate it.

When tweaking the wording of the Perk I'll take that into consideration. I forgot until just now that I meant to mess with the wording, so I guess I'm not done for the night yet.

2021-11-26 13:56:11 +0000 UTCIf you have had the PC/motherboard for awhile. It may have a watch battery attached which if run out causes major issues including the chance it don't boot. That falls under obscure crap that will fuck your PC and cost less than a pound to fix.

2021-11-26 13:44:00 +0000 UTCUse the Cloud, Luke: It's not the 90s anymore. Either buy a cheap chromebook or connect your smartphone to your HDMI TV along with a keyboard (or buy a cheap dock). Expensive laptop not needed unless you are doing coding/3D modelling/animation.

The complexity of it will depend on the age of your computer (older ~= easier) and whether your disk is encrypted at rest but if should still be feasable :) In the meantime, good luck and don't worry about "missing your deadlines" :)

2021-11-26 05:11:23 +0000 UTCIf it just doesn't power on at all the hard drive is likely fine so your data is still probably going to be there. If the computer just dies its usually a PSU but could be something like a mobo too. If the mobo got fried somehow then it all gets more expensive though.

2021-11-26 05:07:43 +0000 UTCDon't worry. Even if your computer is dead the harddrive is probably still working and only one other component ist dead. My wild guess would be the power supply in case your computer does not even show any other signs (led or beeping). If you see some light on the mainboard you can work with these and look into the troubleshooting guide. I had a scare this week because my computer could not boot Windows after an update, luckily loading the last Windows backup and updating again worked. If you have questions you can contact me.

You have a understanding fan base here, we wont kill you about something like that. Well, we might chain you to a chair and let you write chapters in accord, but dont panic, we will be gentle about it and provide a lot of engery drings so you wont have to sleep. Dont panic tough, the chair we chain you to will have nice polstering... ^^ About the perk, i personally dont think the choices where bad, only her reasoning for speaking about combat was... not god. The perk in question would have provided a lot of help in enchanting, but would only have had a small impact on her combat ability, which is why i was dissatisfied with her reasoning. It was plainly illogical. But the choices where satisfying. ^^
