I've heard people compare Doug Ford to Larry Hogan. I think they're similar kinds of politicians.

2025-02-06 05:18:08 +0000 UTCThoughts on Canada: Ford is a bumbling idiot, an awful premier who is completely beholden to developers, lobbyists and big business but is somehow able to put on a heroism masterclass in key moments of crisis (COVID and now for example). Domestically he's pretending to be mister number 1 anti-trump and the media is playing along to it. It's pathetic. He has used this newfound popularity to call a provincial election where he's expected to win an unprecedented majority. The opposition parties (libs and NDP) in Ontario are really bad, completely consumed by ineffective vacuous neoliberalism. Trump is deeply unpopular in Canada to the point where Canadians are booing the US anthem at sports games. I think Ford's comments to waters reflect the class interests of the section of the Ontario bourgeoisie he answers to. Unlimited free trade etc. He's probably trying to use basic anti trump Canadian nationalist rhetoric to cleverly build support for more neoliberalism: selling off more industries and public assets, and loosening trade restrictions and other regulations when the tariff talk goes away. There IS a political space for a left nationalist position (which used to be prominent in the 1970s) but sadly the NDP isn't meeting the moment so there likely will not be any significant left nationalist political movement coming out of this. Singh should have stepped down years ago. There's some kind of special providence that protects drunks, children and Ontario politicians named Ford. The good news is that Poilievre has decidedly eaten shit and came out of this looking like a total idiot.
