Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series - On Leather Wings

On this episode of Blabbin 'Bout Batman, we turn back the clock to the very first production episode of Batman: The Animated Series! In his debut, the '90s animated caped crusader tangles with the relatively unpopular Man-Bat—a villain completely unknown to viewers of the then-recent Tim Burton movies. The result is a dark, moody episode that perfectly establishes the dark, moody series to follow. So have a rabies shot handy and listen in!

I laughed so hard that I had a coughing fit when Bob said Batman would "climb into his penis and fuck the city"

“It’s the No VigilanteS Club. We’re allowed to have one, Bullock” EDIT: Also, if Batman is trying to make Man-Bat crash, shouldn’t he have covered his *ears* instead of his eyes? I hope someone got fired for that blunder.

You sound like those English guys who go to the u.s and say the nhs is bad.

For that clunky exchange of information with Bruce regarding the bats in his chimney (how did they resist the obvious belfry play?), I interpreted it as the grumpy old scientist went off and examined the hair samples and his son-in-law analyzed the tape. He probably just wrote down his findings and passed it on to his father-in-law to then relay to Bruce, and since he clearly didn't even want to be bothered in the least with this task, he had no desire to analyze the tape himself or even hear it. It's clunky, for sure, and I think purposely so as it allows us to keep thinking the old guy is the actual Man-Bat by offering up the obviously phony explanation of starlings and bats. It's kind of a cheat, but I also get the desire to not want to insert a quick sequence where Kirk is handing Dr. March his findings just before he phones Bruce. Clunkiness forgiven, as this is one of the best debut episodes of an animated series I can recall. While it's slightly disappointing that for many it wasn't the first episode they saw, we've been so removed from 1992 at this point that countless people have probably experienced this as their first episode by virtue of the DVD release. It's just a fun piece of exciting, moody, stylized animation which can be so hard to find these days in "children's" animation.

medically assisted suicide is a nuanced topic and while i agree that it should be legalized, the current system in canada has been used to pressure people to choose this option instead of being a ‘burden on the state and their families’. disability activists have been fighting this for a long time now. basically it’s seen as a cost-saving measure and a way to impose austerity rather than an ethical option for people with no alternative treatment. and it is being pushed in the US now for the same reasons. some politicians see it as a cheap alternative to actual healthcare. i know the hosts mean well but it’s not as good as it sounds.

playing the Freakazoid "how TOY-ETIC can you get?" clip in my head during most scenes involving the Batmobile

Wow, for the longest time, I thought this was a TMS episode. That’s how pretty it looks.

Because of the later VHS releases/early DVD releases (before the full seasons) were still in production order, I have seen this episode SO MANY TIMES because of only having the first like 10 episodes officially for what felt like ages as a kid. As far as a first episode goes, I still think it's FANTASTIC - a good tragic villain plotline that makes you feel, Bullock and his cops mistakenly going after Batman, and Batman doing forensic science type stuff. I do really like the sequel episodes with Kirk and Francine too, but this is easily one of the best Man-Bat stories in his long history - though he has had some pretty cool recent stuff, including his titular mini-series and the Task Force Z series (as cheesy as the premise was). -- Of course, the difference in Alfred's voice was something that was always strange to me as a kid, and after learning the reasoning behind it, I wondered why they kept these but fully scrapped all of Tim Curry's Joker work... until I watched that footage with him from late last year or early 2023.
