Talking Simpsons - The Great Louse Detective

The Berkeley Studio Era of Talking Simpsons ends just as it began: With a Sideshow Bob episode! Yes, as record one more time in our old studio, we cover the season 14 episode that brings back Robert Underdunk Terwilliger and introduces an infamous (and somewhat familiar) culprit. How does Al Jean's new era deal with the return of the recurring villain, and why does it involve Mardi Gras and musical parodies? Listen along and learn as we've grown accustomed to your face on this week's podcast!

speaking of once-famous pitchmen who're dead or in jail, i was recently alerted (againt my will) to the fact that Vince the Shamwow guy has launched his own anti-woke podcast, in case anyone could possible care to know where the Slapchop guy fell on the political spectrum

The 2007-2017 Transformers films CGI is gorgeous

The lackluster mystery and forced (bad) tie-in to Homer's Enemy really hurts this episode for me, despite Kelsey Grammer bringing it his all as he usually does with Bob. As you guys discussed, the mystery is so half-baked and tacked on that it never gives you a solid red herring, and if you're paying enough attention it's clearly just Frank Grimes, until you learn about him being the son. I was 6 when this episode aired, so I have no idea if I caught onto the answer right away, but upon revisiting this for the podcast without looking it up on the wiki first, I was pretty quickly like "oh GOD it's the Frank Grimes Jr episode." I'm kind of surprised he NEVER came back afterwards, given how much they've tried to milk sequelizing out of the first 10 or so seasons of the show (especially lately). I think that's for the best since this never should have happened given that Homer's Enemy is a high concept, meta episode that's not supposed to be really taken so seriously in terms of canon (and then has to have more canon bent for Jr to exist and be an adult). Good riddance, Grimey Jr

I remember having a huge problem with how they reverted Bob's character to his old murderous self after the Cecil episode, so I'm glad you guys acknowledged it. I usually don't care about Simpsons continuity, but the Bob storyline always had an air of realness to it (except for how they refer to Bart foiling Selma's murder years ago in 1993, years before, while he's the same age, I guess)

I like the MCU and Doc Hammer’s comment didn’t offend me because I didn’t understand it.

I met David Hyde Pierce a couple months ago in New York and though I didn’t ask what he’s been up to, he seems like a genuinely swell guy.

Great episode as always, though not sure I can stand to hear the blasphemy against Pepsi. It's refreshing and healthful! (if their classic advertising is to be believed). Royal Crown is also good.

The line about the origin of Homer’s car does make me wonder if the writers’ knowledge of Cold War era geography was a little off. Technically I suppose a car factory anywhere could import soviet tanks for parts, but I suspect that they think Croatia was part of the USSR, which it wasn’t. Croatia was part of Yugoslavia, which was a communist state but never part of the Soviet Union. Joy Ann Reid made this mistake when saying that two of Trump’s wives were from “Soviet Yugoslavia”. This was a double error, because Ivana was Slovak, which was part of Czechoslovakia at the time and never Yugoslavia

I also have to give credit to ICP for successfully inculcating an anti racist and anti fascist culture in their fanbase. It's a bit surreal marching alongside a boombox-blasting juggalo, but you can count on them showing out. (That said, I will always chuckle at their "F'n magnets" song)

Yeah, that's my Wind Waker memory, too, but I didn't work at a GameStop.

I drank a lot of RC Cola in high school because it was super cheap and I was soda-obsessed. I recently had to start going back into the office for work (boo) after being remote for 3 years and the vending machine there started stocking RC. I had to buy one for old time's sake and it was pretty awful. I'm curious if Bob has had it recently because, to me, it tasted sweeter than Pepsi, which I'm not fond of either. If I'm going to have a soda these days it's either Coke, Dr. Pepper, or a lemon-lime soda if I'm not feeling good. I'm sure it's a psychosomatic thing, but when I don't feel good a Sprite or ginger ale seems to help make me feel better. This is definitely a pretty weak Sideshow Bob episode. If I had to choose, I'd probably take it over the previous one, but none of the others. I think Henry is a little conditioned by the most recent Bob episodes as I was surprised to see most of them before this one actually occurred pretty early in their respective seasons. It seems like around this time the show started thinking of the Sideshow Bob episode as a mid-season thing, maybe before the holiday break or something, but I haven't looked at the Bob episodes to come to see if my theory holds true.

I guess my 2000s internet gamer spaces* were more progressive than I remembered** because to me, Wind Waker will forever be known as "More like Cel-da" (*: the Penny Arcade phorum) (**: ...or my memory is worse than I realized!)

Watching the episode in advance of the podcast, I couldn't help but notice that the Japanese subtitles purposefully omit the Emperor from Homer's list of enemies.

Who's on the Mount Rushmore of Bob's?

When I first moved to New Zealand, they had tv commercials here that were just Rusty Crowe sitting on a couch, addressing the camera. He said 'You can now buy Robin Hood on dvd and Blu Ray, its a bloody great film, we had a lot of fun making it soooo, yeah, go buy it, good on ya'. It was very odd. Good vibes re: moving house y'all

I hate to stick up for ICP but they are from Detroit and I was raised in the same area. Faygo was huge for kids our age in SE Michigan. We marinated our chicken in Rock n Rye, drank Faygo Cola instead of Coke and made sunshine on a stick with their Red Pop. Our Cola Wars was between Faygo and Towne Club and it was no contest. TC meant you did something wrong.

Kevin Nash

It stinks!

What did y’all think of Clerks 3?

Dan Karlin

That ending song was cringe lol

Back massages should be covered in universal healthcare for all remote workers. It’s fascinating that Kelsey Grammer’s relevance petered out around the time of the Simpsons’ own. Every single Bob episode had been an event… With this and the last one… It’s like, “Sideshow Bob is back! So what?” The Frasier reboot looks like the definition of pablum. And yeah, it does show how far the medium has sunk when this level of stiffness is being seen through the lens of, “I miss THESE days.”

Thad Komorowski

I don’t know I can’t save pictures on Twitter anymore since the new name

For the record I was fond of hookers.

Glad the move went good for you guys and happy Bob and Nina finally get to be together. Hope Henry and his husband also got settled in their place ok.
