My dad served 30 years in the Army and did two tours in Vietnam Nam. He loves Rambo and always says that bit at the end when Rambo says all that is the best part of the whole movie and says it all. It was after this movie and the things Reagan said about the Viet Nam vets that started to finally change. People finally started the, “thank you for your service” sentiment to veterans and active duty they see in uniform even to this day. The treatment of Viet Nam vets from protesters and such was one of the worst things people in this country did. Thanks for reacting to this one.

Asia, the name of the book is First Blood (1972) written by David Morrell 🇺🇸 and shout out to Sylvester Stallone for his acting abilities. You don’t see any of Rocky in First Blood and you don’t see any of Rambo when you watch Rocky. Two totally different characters.👍🏻

This was beautifully stated. People tend to forget that men get out here and fight and die for their country, and assume all the trauma that comes with it. Comments like these warm the heart to know someone out there remembers, and lives to help the next generation know.

At the very beginning when Rambo was talking to the lady, the cancer (I take it the guy was her husband but not sure.) was a result of Agent Orange a herbicide the US used over Vietnam to uncover forestry to make locating the enemy easier. Unfortunately, both Vietnamese and US troops developed deadly cancers, resulting in countless deaths, and generations of defects and illnesses developed from it.
Here is an excerpt if you are interested:
https://www.history.com/topics/vietnam-war/agent-orange-1
Agent Orange, which contained the deadly chemical dioxin, was the most commonly used herbicide. It was later proven to cause serious health issues—including cancer, birth defects, rashes and severe psychological and neurological problems—among the Vietnamese people as well as among returning U.S. servicemen and their families.

Amen, and that is what makes this movie a great classic, it showcases the PTSD that some soldiers went through. Fought so that those cops and towns people (the US over) could live free lives only to treat him the way they did.
Probably the only thing in this day and age I can say has drastically improved when it comes to understanding the psychological condition of war vets.
Now if only they would improve the V.A, my belief is that no soldier who has done decent time should ever be homeless, or left without basic necessities...ever.

I was a baby at the end of Vietnam, but my Dad was a Drill Sargent in the Army and I grew up an Army brat living in Europe and in Georgia, my home state. I can't imagine what those young men had to endure but I do know that the average age of those drafted was 19. So most of those young men hadn't even begun their adult lives and they became trauma bonded to their military brothers, then lost many of them during war, through injuries, or through mental illness suffered as a result of their experiences in war. The ones who made it back home, years later, were never the same yet expected to just pick up and live a normal life as if nothing had happened or that life didn't continue on without them while they were away. Add th that the horrific way they were treated by Americans who disagreed with the war, as if they had asked to be drafted or chose what missions to fight during the war, especially when much of the protesting was done by or organized by college students who couldn't be drafted because they came from wealthy enough families who could afford to pay for their college educations There's nothing like being sacrificed against your will and then judged for it by people who have no idea what it's like to be you. The way the Vietnam veterans have been treated and not cared for properly in America is one subject that truly makes me ashamed to be an American. I was just a baby and therefore not responsible for that travesty, but now that I am an adult, with 2 sons who are now young men, I will always acknowledge their sacrifice and vow never to sit quietly and let it ever happen that way again. Thank you to ALL veterans for your service, may God bless you always, and God bless the USA! 🥰🇺🇸

This was hard to watch in the way they treated Rambo. I never watched the movie before. I saw little bits in changing the tv channel but now that I got to see it, OMG. Well the Sheriff was unfair and he started the whole fiasco with Rambo. I was a child when the Vietnam war ended and I would see a few guys in our neighborhood that were "shell shocked" from the war. They wandered around, one wore a guitar strapped on his back, singing and talking to himself. They went through hell those soldiers & were not welcomed home.

Love this movie and can't wait to view it with you. It is a shame the Vietnam Vets were vilified when they returned home. Too many lost their lives in the war; too many saw things they can never forget, too many were prisoners of war and tortured. Doesn't matter if many US citizens did not support the war...those men went through hell, followed orders and deserve respect.

Great movie! I’m glad you finally got around to doing this one. This came out in 1982 right after the release of Rocky III. They were filmed back to back. I saw this in the theater when I was in high school. This was filmed in the town of Hope, British Columbia in Canada. The town still looks pretty much the same as it did in 1982 and has become quite the tourist destination. The bridge that he crossed in the beginning of the movie was torn down a few years ago, despite Sylvester Stallone‘s attempt to try to save it. This location video was filmed three years ago, which was one year before the 40th anniversary celebration that the town hosted. https://youtu.be/JUFxHot14Fc?si=H1L-myO_YziKDmEX

First one is by far the best. The sequels each become more cartoonish than the previous one, but certainly entertaining. This film has a lot more depth and thoughtfulness than most "action" flicks, particularly in the final stretch. It's definitely not what most people are expecting. And Brian Dennehy is a great heavy. Pretty sure it was this film that put him on the map, even though he had been around a little while prior to this.
