Behind the Scenes Look: 'How To Be Logical'

Hello lovely patrons!

My next video is coming along nicely - working title How To Be Logical. I'm moving flats this month to somewhere a bit more secure, so I've designed this video to be shorter and simpler to give me time to pack and get moved. Here are some pictures and screenshots!

I wanted to make a more down-to-earth educational video this time around, focused on teaching some core concepts rather than a video essay that argues for a thesis

Although that said... I mean, it's me, I had to have some fun with it!

Meet Julius Caesar, and no I don't mean Shakespeare's version! In order to look at how arguments work I'll be examining a speech from Sallust's Catiline War - supposedly spoken by the real Caesar himself! (Or close to, anyway.) And in order to examine the speech, I'll first have to perform it!

Here's what it looks like in the editing timeline - a 10 minute unbroken monologue! Love a cheeky bit of theatre! At 34 minutes this video is tighter than my last few (although I was aiming for 25 haha!)

And this is the last video I'll ever film in this flat! It's the end of an era! (PS all those DVS and manga belong to one of my flatmates lol.)

An Ancient Roman costume was a bit beyond my budget so I decided to interpret Caesar as a modern politician - kindof Anakin Skywalker meets Donald Trump. It fit well with my goal of teaching those core concepts: it's not just about being able to analyse an argument from 2,000 years ago, this philosophy will hopefully be useful now too!

Here you can see the makeup in detail: I used my normal plain foundation, then added some concealer that's just slightly too dark for my skin to give him a sallow complexion, especially around the eyes. I thickened the eyebrows with pencil, then added a tiny bit of shadow and liner under the eyes, blended in, to make it look like he's been up all night for weeks! I also deliberately didn't add any setting powder so my face got nice and shiny like he's uncomfortable under the Senate lights! My hair is quite long at the moment so it's actually tied back in a ragged ponytail, with that emo/Hitler fringe left dangling.

We'll go through his speech together and look at how the argument fits together

This one still needs some tweaking: I haven't quite nailed down the visual style yet and I still need to put most of the music in, but it's getting there! It should be out by the end of the month.
