Art Collab with Scott Emmons

Today I share with you a sampling of my collaborative work with artist Scott Emmons. He and I have often worked together to curate/edit work, scout models, and create digital collages of my photography and his drawings. He has even hosted a few of my photoshoots at his Long Island studio, during which he collected inspiration for his drawings.

Check out more of Scott's work on his instagram pages: @swe_8930.2 and @swemmons

Hi Scott, tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to start drawing.

I’m a scientist working in genetics and neuroscience. I’ve had a long research career on the faculty of a New York city medical school. I’m now about to retire. I’ve always been interested in the fine arts. Maybe I got the bug when my mother put me in a summer outdoor oil painting class with a local artist, age nine. When the opportunity arose during a sabbatical, I enrolled in an evening painting class. That’s when the bug returned. I’ve taken several art workshops and seriously studied life drawing, taking advantage of the many opportunities available in New York city. A big step was when I started to work with models privately. I can’t get enough of it and look forward to much more in retirement. I’d rather call it my second career!

Have any fun anecdotes from a studio session?

Oh boy! There have been many memorable sessions. Working with a model involves an intense interpersonal interaction. We explore together. With doubles, the models tend to relate more to each other and forget the presence of the artist. Either way, I have lots of stories I could tell, but I’m not sure I want to tell them!

What’s it like working with Ryan?

Working with Ryan was very natural because we have the same philosophy. We both view working with a model as an artistic collaboration, as much coming from the model as from the artist or photographer. We both enjoy getting to know the models. We try to convey their personalities in our artwork. The sessions with Ryan have just been a whole lot of fun, for everybody! Playful and free.

What’s coming up for you?

My second career! I plan to study art more seriously, possibly taking classes at the Art Students League. I would like to do more painting. For shows, one needs to have a substantial body of work, which I would like to develop.

Models featured in this post include Declan, Zach, Ben, Hugo & Andy.
