to answer your question why does it kill some people and not others - its instinct is to protect its home, so when it is in the physical world and it senses someone in the upside down, it will retreat. but some people have just been able to outsmart it since it’s not very fast on foot.

I believe the purpose was to create mind control drugs/truth serums for interrogation purposes. they gave high doses of drugs such as LSD to non-consenting subjects. a lot of other types of torture were also involved.

I don’t know if you caught on but the reason the “gate” opened was because when EL touched the monster she created a physical contact with the monster which created a gate. Similar to this when EL went to see will when she was floating in the pool she accidentally led the monster straight to will. So it was only a matter of time before he was a goner
