Questions from Sideshow, Kit & Ian

Kit asks about how to fix up a set of old friction tuners and Ian asks me all about lyrics and songs (i.e. what's the deal with "migrating" lyrics and when should or shouldn't we incorporate our own original verses/arrangements?).

Welcome, John. Your project is perfectly OK with me and I encourage you to post anything regarding it and other ideas you have here and over in the "community" posting section of this site. One of the first books I read of my own volition was some old collection of occult tales, Faust among them.

Hey Clifton; Thanks for getting this site going, it’s awesome. I will try and keep a long story short. Eight years ago I bought a banjo for my 50th birthday present. Best day ever. Finding your Youtube postings was an inspiring discovery for me. But I guess the big reason I wanted to engage you now, and those who frequent this site, is to talk about lyrics. If banjo is a hobby, and for me making TV pays my bills, I would say, over the last ten years or so writing has been the art-form to which I have dedicated my heart. Of late, I have been working on musical based on the Faust tale, that uses old time music. Your version of “Been All around this World” has been a model for one of the songs. I say model because I am altering the lyrics. I wonder what you and your community think of the practice? I ask the question coming in with the opinion that it is ok. It seems there is a rich tradition of multiple lyrics for old time songs. The following is my alterations that better fit the character I am creating. This dude is fighting for the soul of a good doctor. My version goes like this… I am working on this new mankind, got mud up to my knees. I am digging on this new man’s mind, got blood up to my knees. I have been working for my saviour, but she’s so hard to please. I’ve been all around this world. Anywho I look forward to interacting with this site, so thanks again for doing the work to launch and maintain this site.
