Darling Cora | Close-Up

Here's my attempt at a close-up shot of both hands playing Darling Cora out of gCGCC (actual tuning is eAEAA).

I learned this song from George R. Gibson (master musician and prolific researcher from Knott County, Kentucky) who said he learned it this way from his father, Mal Gibson. When I have heard George play this tune he often starts out finger picking before jumping into overhand style.

I cant seem to find the 2finger tab for this song. Did you produce any or is it just visual?

Clifton, this format of both hands and played VERY slowly is the best format for me to understand and learn the song. Thanks for that great lesson. I'm not particularly adept at picking out the strings that are plucked and fretted without this type of visual. Hope you tape more of this type of lesson and be aware that there is no such thing as too slow when instructing. Great job.

Thank you for sharing… it is so helpful seeing this slowed down.

Liam, I am out-of-town visiting family members for a few more days--look for a Q&A video response to your question soon. In short: your are NOT "doing wrong" and I know this because there is no wrong way to play traditional banjo. The fact you find it difficult to play it differently tells me that this might be the best approach for your. Like I said, once I get back home I'll sit down with banjo and camera and figure out a more detailed response for you. Thanks for joining us and participating.

Clifton. I'm really enjoying your posts, thanks for sharing your knowledge of music and history with us! I have a question for you if you don't mind... When I play two finger thumb lead style I tend to play the opposite pattern of what you do. Take the drop thumb roll you play in wild Bill Jones and pretty Polly for example , you seem to be playing strings 21512151 etc whereas I would play 2512151 etc. Also I noticed that when you play a roll say in between melody notes you for example the 3rd string followed by 1 and 5 whereas I tend to play 3rd followed by 5 and 1 or thumb thumb index. I hope that makes sense? My question is am I doing it wrong? I find it really hard to play any other way.

Thanks Clifton!

OK, will keep doing these.

Good.

That's fine too. I definitely have up-picked it.

What do you think about playing the song in the up pickin overhand style?

Jonas Nottbeck

That's great like that, cliff much easier to see and learn. Love this tune, gonna get straight on it. Thanks mate.

This is a great teaching video. I find it much more helpful than to have the videos of each hand separate. Thanks!

Jonas Nottbeck

Awesome. These videos are great, thank you.
