Let's Talk BUSKING

busk [bəsk]: to play music or otherwise perform for voluntary donations in the street or in subways.

"My main goal is to get a decent repertoire together and do some busking. It doesn't have to be much, just a few tunes will do, but it has to be impressive enough to get people to stop and listen and perhaps contribute to my beer fund. This is actually a pretty BIG step for a novice player, as you can imagine." - Mick

That is "Sugar Hill" gCGCD learned from Josh Hayes and Matt Kinman.

What song are you playing at the beginning of the video?

I don't know about busking, but that's a kick-ass tune from Creed Burchfield!

Richard Hawkins

Do they have Buskers festivals where you live? They have one every year in Victoria BC it's a great event with every level and type of busker. You can walk around downtown and there is someone playing on every corner. So many talented people out there. https://www.tourismvictoria.com/see-do/festivals-events/downtown-victoria-buskers-festival

Yes! Playing with a good percussionist is perhaps the easiest and most traditional form of banjo accompaniment. Remember that the ancestors of our modern banjo were usually accompanied by drums and percussive dance.

sorry meant to post this one: but that other one of ben solo is quite nice too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PehSKilX3Y

Speaking of busking, these two are pretty fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk7elP4KZUA

Thanks for commenting, Jake. Sounds like your bratwurst dealer is a smart man--he knows how to make $$$. I learned the same when playing around middle Tennessee one summer with Matt Kinman. When playing fares and festivals Matt knew half of the vendors by name and they all wanted us to come play near their customers to draw attention and bring in more money for both parties. Our biggest payday, however, was playing around the campfire of a wonderful woman whose name, as far as I knew, was just "Maw." No sooner than Matt and I had completed a song, Maw would take off her wide-brimmed black hat and personally walk around the crowd telling (not asking) people to put money in the hat for us. Since Maw was busy all day and night cooking and feeding people, nobody wanted to disappoint her and, if they could, they'd throw in a $10 or $20 just to earn HER approval! God bless that woman.

I'm with Clifton--my measure is, after 2 hours, you make $10+ it's an ok day. $20+ is a success. $50+ is an awesome day. I can't sing much more than 2 hours. Location is super important too: Farmers Markets are great spots, in the Midwest at least where there's not a lot of foot traffic in other places. And even within a Market, if you can get next to a popular vendor, you'll do a lot better than elsewhere--the best was when I was next to the bratwurst guy: folks would stand in line for his stuff, listen to me play while they did and since none of stuff was $5 or $10 (always like $6 or $7), they always had change to lay down in the case when they finished.

Jake Tolbert

I agree. Busking is a good way to immerse oneself in musical performance.

Clifton Hicks

I wouldn't say I was very good when I started (and the pay reflected that), but you improve in leaps and bounds when you put yourself in that spot.

Dwayne Strohm

Oh man, I busked many hours in Victoria, B.C. You are definitely correct about singing; I started singing for exactly that reason.

Dwayne Strohm

Sorry, bad joke.
