"Banjo Tales" with Mike Seeger

A number of you have inquired with me about Mike Seeger's "Banjo Tales" film and field recording project that I participated in during 2008. Due to the sensitive nature of this subject (and the numerous parties involved) I have been reluctant to respond to your inquiries... until now.

Aginsky: "We went to Virginia and filmed Tina Steffey, Rhoda Kemp, Debbie Grim Yates and Joe Ayers; Alabama for Robert Montgomery; Tennessee for Leroy Troy; West Virginia for Franklin George; North Carolina for Peter Gott, Jerry Adams, Justin Robinson, Marsha Bowman Todd, Riley Baugus, Rhiannon Giddens, Brien Fain and Trish Fore; and Kentucky for George Gibson, John Haywood, Jesse Wells, Brett Ratliff, Clifton Hicks, Jackie Helton and Matt Kinman, but not all of these musicians are in this version of the film which presents the banjo and old-time music as vital ingredients in southern culture."

"Banjo Tales" with Mike Seeger

Comments

Yes, it is definitely worth watching. Think of "Banjo Tales" as a preview of what is to come with "Just Around the Bend." It's all the same film maker, the same footage and the same musicians--but "Just Around the Bend" will feature many more musicians than what is previewed in "Banjo Tales." Jesse Wells, for example, will have even more time to play music and speak in the finished product due out next spring!

Clifton Hicks

It's still a good flik. You should check it out. Got my old teacher Jesse Wells in it.

Check this out. Is this what y'all are talking about?

From Alexia Smith (Mike's wife): 'Clifton, it's wonderful you are impassioned about this, and I add my voice to yours urging people to contact Smithsonian Folkways. It's distressing to me, as well, that Mike's project hasn't come out. I'm afraid I've slowed way down in pressing for it. Maybe this initiative will help! I'm glad to see SF again confirm their commitment to the project and give a target date (just about 10 years after the second recording trip we made, in 2009...). Production manager Mary Monseur is a big fan of Mike's, and I know she personally wants to see this through. 'As SF says, Mike's project is called "Just Around the Bend" -- not "Banjo Tales" -- & it consists of 2 CDs and a DVD along with a fat booklet. SF has had the material in hand for years now, along with some small supplementary funds I raised to support its release. I think you're right that SF has gone through some big changes in that time, & they're doubtless under greater market pressures than in earlier times. 'Banjo Tales is Yasha Aginsky's own film using the material he shot for Mike's project, edited differently & including fewer musicians. The Berkeley Old-Time Music Festival is the venue where it was shown. It's a really nice film, but it's not part of Mike's project. I believe whoever puts it out, whether SF or other, would need to get releases from the artists, though that's a legal question & I may be wrong.'

Post it here in the "community" section if you like, although I think they may have responded to several people with that same long email.

Clifton Hicks

I also got this mail from Folkways...let's hope for the best!

Jonas Nottbeck

Long story short the movie, two CDs and an 80 page booklet is expected to be available for purchase in the spring of 2019. Apparently a lot of us patreons have responded to your video because they made sure to tell me that they have received a lot of questions concerning this film recently so maybe something is finally being done. Fingers crossed

Patrick Campbell

Stay in touch with the people who were recorded for the film. You might be able to work together and make something happen. If you want to hit the road with those musicians, there might be other ways than Folkways.

Micheál Mac Labhrás

The reply I got was sort of long. Do you want me to forward the email?

Christina Petro

Gott segne sie, herr Nottbeck!

Clifton Hicks

Yeah...let's support the project!!!

Jonas Nottbeck

Thank you for sharing this. Even if only half of the members on here contact them that would be great start.
