Q&A | Drop-Thumb While Up-Picking?

Comments

The more I look at it, I realize her style is a wild mixture of up-picking, down-picking, brushing/strumming and drop-thumbs! It seems that she is drop-thumbing to the 1st string as well, an unusual technique.

Hello Clifton, thank you for talking about the question I asked! Maybel Cawthorn is throwing an impressive drop thumb in her up picking. She is gorgeous! This interruption of the flow is what made me ask this question and I can somehow avoid the drop thumb while up picking with using the "knot county lick" but it is different. You encouraged me to work on that technique!

Wow, ok. So I've been trying the drop thumb during my up picking practice, but in over hand style, wich has been a bit of a style bender. But never thought of trying it in two finger, leading off with the index. Just tried it. Still tough, but way more flowing. Definitely something exiting to practice, while up picking. Another breakthrough. I really can't get enough. To good.

Old Maybel Cawthorn certainly seemed to do a mixture of down-picking and up-picking with plenty of straight strumming in between. I'd liked to have seen how she picked the banjo a decade or two before Rosenbaum met her.

Absolutely love this style. I find that when I'm playing these mixtures of techniques, my hand moves in that realm somewhere between up-picking, frailing and something that feels like 'fingerstyle'. Inserting the dropped-thumb / upward moving index while you keep the right hand up-and-down clawhammer motion going is indeed tough, because you don't want to break the rhythm.
