SOLD--Three Early 1900s "Figure 8" Banjos

These banjos are all SOLD--Thanks! If you are still interested in a banjo email me at clifhicks@gmail.com or message me here on Patreon with your price range and what kind of banjo you're looking for and the next time I pick up another load of banjos from George Gibson's collection I will guarantee one of them for you. Thanks again. - Clif Hicks

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will offer these privately here first to for $290--shipped. They are not fancy but are good antique instruments that would be perfect for a beginner and/or anybody who doesn't have a lot of money to spend on a banjo.

Each has a new goat hide head installed by George Gibson who also took off every other tension hook and replaced those with a simple screw-and-nut to cover the hole. These were typical early 1900s mail order banjos that came with just a ton of useless brackets on them that were more of a gimmick and nuisance than anything else. The necks and pots are all original; the nuts, bridges and tail pieces vary. New strings and new tuners.

If you're interested just comment here or message me and we'll sort it out.

Just got mine. Tightened the tuners. Set the bridge. Tuned and starting playing. Great sounding instrument.

John, I received your email and saved it in my inbox. I'll do my utmost to find something.

Hey Clifton. I'd love to be on a waiting list for a banjo like these. I love the vintage open back banjos. Price range of around $350. Thank you.

John Welborn

John, if you'll email me clifhicks(at)gmail(dot)com with your price range and a note that you want geared tuners I will add you to our working list. Yes, violin type tuners and the pre-machine "pancake" style tuners are both under the "friction" category and can be a pain if not properly up-kept. Those 1890s pancake friction tuners require a pair of thin paper washers to work properly. These can be ordered from some music supply places or made oneself. Violin style friction pegs require a generous application of bow rosin or beeswax to their shafts periodically to work properly as well.

I would be most interested in a new/old-time banjo. I have a Chinese made Fender, (My first) and a 1970 Framus. I love the sound of my Framus but the neck is challenging, where as the neck on the $100 Fender is pretty sweet. You mentioned "Friction tuners" ... with my poor ears, I have a hard time tuning my Framus vs. the Fender. Are friction tuners like the pegs in violins? As much as I would love having a vintage banjo, I want to avoid the frustration of old style tuning pegs. Machine heads, is that a proper term?

John F. Cooke

Amen. My first banjo was a used Goldtone "Cripple Creek" that my father bought me for $100. That wasn't a terrible banjo but it certainly lacked character. These old mail order axes have been making music for generations--God knows what stories they could tell...

I expect the next run will be slightly more expensive, however, we will keep costs as low as possible. Everything will be priced very fairly.

Clifton Hicks

I'm glad these are heading out to good new homes!

Justin Hoffmann

That price, especially shipped, is very good. You are very kind and generous to offer these to your followers!

Brandon Furber

I'm sure I can find you something in the $400-$500 range on the next run. Etowah is about an hour from my house outside of Copperhill and I'd be happy to come meet you halfway around Ocoee. I know a decent outdoor watering hole there that just opened called the "Bus Bar."

Clifton Hicks

Ok thanks. I've been playing overhand with a Chinese banjo for around 2 yrs now. I lie the old time music and want a banjo around that time frame. Somewhere in that price range would be good. Maybe a little more. I can pick it up if that would save shipping. I live in Etowah.
