They reason the shared the title and prize money was because of how points are distributes in chess tournaments. You get 0 points for losing, 0.5 points for a draw and 1 point for winning. So when Beth mentions Benny having 2 draws going into their match, and her having all wins that means- that lets say they played 14 games total: Beth went into their match with 14 points, whilst Benny only had 13 (12 wins + 2 draws). Thus Beth would have won the tournament if they had drawn (14.5 point to 13.5 points) but because she lost and got 0 points, they both ended on 14 points and had to split the winnings.
