The one you mentioned also has cultural notes in that line about club culture with Hobi (a man) calling girls "unnies" which typically only girls use to refer to older girls. Men only use that in particular contexts which gives more perspective to that line. And the "beagle beagling" thing doesn't hit for people who don't know that in Korea, they call people who are free-spirited and playful in an ornery way "beagles." I wish some translators did a better job of trying to make some of that stuff clear. It really helps people understand and appreciate the creativity and intelligence of Hoseok's lyricism.

Another thing young ARMY don't know is that bad press, unfounded accusations, and antifan campaigns like that are literally funded by competing labels. A whisper of misogyny or plagiarism to a reporter on the take, or buzz in the fancafe chats, are some of the cheapest and most effective marketing tools they have. They easily fan the flames of fanwars and create more loyal fans through adversity. (It's no mistake that EXO-Ls in particular went after BTS/ARMY.) They don't care if someone dies (literally) in the process as minion fandoms implement cyber bullying and hashtag campaigns and even gang up against groups from upstart labels, for example. It was so extraordinary that OG ARMY stayed defensive instead of reactive in a system that uses ones own passion and protectiveness against them. I think it's also a testament to how much BigHit was staying out of ARMY's way that there weren't nasty counterattacks. ARMY was just always supporting the guys.

When SUGA started cypher 3 I lost it - but not as much as for Ddaeng! I never thought there would be the possibility of seeing those live again! 😵😄 I love that they remember their "oldies", too. I wonder what would happen if they were challenged to sing every one of their songs. Would they find some they had forgotten they love? Are there some they were so sick of they never wanted to revisit? I can't imagine having such a big body of work. I wish ARMY wasn't so focused on charting the title tracks and could give b-sides the attention they deserve. Dark & Wild stands out to me so much, idk what it is - the concepts, the aesthetics, the sound, it's just so different. It's not my favorite album but it's definitely special and I can see why so many people claim it's the best one (along with LY: Tear). The production is honestly nuts, it's always so pleasant to listen to the songs with headphones. Not that their other projects don't have amazing production, but this album especially sounds so nice and polished. So 4 More is a different track which you can listen to on SoundCloud, nobody knows why 2nd Grade is called that on Spotify haha. Embarrassed and Blanket kick are the same song, some of them just happen to have multiple titles 😂 I can't wait for you to explore the last three albums, Skool Luv Affair is probably my fav out of the older ones, so many gems there. I feel like you're still not ready for fetus Bangtan lol, at least when it comes to 2 Cool 4 Skool (We Are Bulletproof pt 2, I'm talking about you). It's always a great time watching you dive in to their discography and learning more about the boys.

I was waiting for this!!! D&W is one of my favorite albums of theirs. I love this genre of music, and I've been wanting it on an LP for forever. Hopefully they'll release a vinyl version while they are on their break. It's true that their topics change after this era -- but one thing that has never changed about BTS is their HONESTY in their lyrics. Everything about this album is just so personal and raw.... just like all their albums before and to follow. They were 16-21 and captured love exactly like 16-21 year olds feel it. And the deep introspection you see on later albums is already present -- in Rain, 2nd Grade, Hip Hop Lover, etc. -- just waiting to be fully refined and really focused in on. BTS has a biography coming out about them in June!! (YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!) So hopefully we'll get more information about the transition from this to HYYH. There's lot's of background info on that shift out there, but I'll let the bio explain more. Thanks so much for this review!! i was laughing SO hard at your reaction in the first half. OMG I'm so happy you went back to the Journey! Dark & Wild is one of my favorites project from them. The amount of iconic classics (like danger) and bops (war of hormone, second grade) mixed with a lot of R&B is amazing. Rain is also my favorite from this album. Also, baby BTS era is kinda different from the albums you listened to, since they were young and They talk about the young adolescent struggle like school and teen romance with angst. Welcome to the era of JK rapper, V growls and grit and all the rap line being full of sass. It will be a fun ride.

Rain is my favorite off the album as well! The little sounds you can hear in the background of the fridge door opening, the sighs, the rain, the jazzy lofi beat, and the beautifully haunting and lonely lyrics are so cathartic. It's one of my most listened and beloved bts songs ever.

This album is still one of BTS’ best in my eyes. I remember the time when I was a new army in 2015, only a year after this album came out. Rain was my favorite BTS song EVER. It just reminds me of how far they have come and it’s crazy to think about but I am of the humble opinion that BTS has never made a bad song. There might be songs I don’t like, but that’s personal taste, not the song being bad. All of their songs are well produced and written but that type of song just might not be for me. But I can always acknowledge that no BTS song is a bad song. There’s a quote from Tablo of Epik High about BTS. He said that whenever he hangs out with any member of BTS, all they want to talk about is music and that a person who is as passionate about it as they are, to make every conversation about music will never make a bad song. And I completely agree with that.

so an interesting fact that many new armys don't know is that the song War of Hormone was the target of many backlash by haters and media in Korea claiming that the lyrics are misogynistic and bad influence lol (notice how only bts got that huge backlash while the whole kpop\pop and even music industry is full of actual harmful misogynistic lyrics that degrade women) and most armys don't mind the lyrics to the song because it is playful and talking about a teenager hormonal experience of love at this age of his life, as well as myself and many more women appreciate complements about our looks from our love interest just as much as complements about our non physical aspects of us like our intelligence etc. ANYWAY bts truly took that backlash to heart and got really affected by it especially namjoon since he is one of the main songwriters so he apologized and after that he actually took effort to have a women studies (?) professor to review his future lyrics after which is wow honestly amazing even though he actually didn't need to do that at all. also. i noticed that they no longer perform or talk about the song really which is sad because many armys really enjoy it.

there is so much West Coast hip hop and beats in this album it was done in a garage in California funny you say Blurred lines for Look Here b/c the first time i heard it i immediately thought Pharell and the Neptunes there is a lot of N.E.R.D. in that song and saying Micheal Jackson on Danger b/c i think of the song Bad every time its my favorite on the album

His line is more along the lines of “are you kidding me” but very casual on the border of rude if you’re not talking to a friend. So while it doesn’t contain actual profanity, the tone they used to convey the message might as well have been “are you fucking kidding me.” 😅

I love dark & wild, especially where sounds, beats, cadences are considered. I often revisit more rap heavy tracks from this project. and Yoongi's Cypher pt.3 line about his tongue movements making men and women come leaves very little to imagination, especially considering during their performances of it j-hope moans to it and Yoongi hip thrusts the air lol

Okay so for the first 4 albums, RM did shine a lot on every song. I think it was because essentially BTS was so new and kind of built around him in the centre. They did not have an idea on how to distribute lines while also staying true to the vision they had for their songs. That came to them over the years of course. Also you see the huge hiphop influence on their music in this era. That is because they did start as a rap and hip hop crew that was later converted to an idol grp before debut. That is why many of their songs are very rap heavy. Vocal line still had their moments but they truly shined beyond the hyyh era. I love their old songs. And their journey to where they are now is so so fascinating, just how the transformation in their musical choices has helped them build their own style.

They did tour yes, the Red Bullet Tour, and the performances are great as expected, a lot smaller in terms of staging because they were working with far less budget back then, but it's still them with their awesome stage presence and they're clearly all having so much fun that it radiates off them

Ah, now I can't wait until we start seeing MVs and live performances come through the customs for this era! I lost my shit when I first saw the War of Hormone video in 2020, so I'm glad you only did lyric videos for the first listen, because this era is...a lot. I love the way this album feels like being 19 again, where you're staring out a rainy window with the deepest thoughts in the world one day and kicking yourself for doing something dumb in front of a crush the next. It's emotional and all over the place and feels like a perfect sophomore project between the first set of albums and HYYH.

YOU FINALLY UNLOCKED MY FAVORITE SONG! (One of two, the other one will be on Skool Luv Affair) The first time I heard Let Me Know I think my soul escaped my body during the chorus. The way Jungkooks voice grates at the end of his line during the latter half of the chorus does something so spacific to my brain I can not handle it. You need to see the live performance of it so you can see Jimin hit that note PERFECTLY on stage. Bless. Can you believe he has EVER been insecure about his voice? Hsjabshiaahsjjshsjj anyways. I genuinely love old BTS. The subject matter is still topics that your used to with them. You're used to them talking about what they've been thinking about. And at this time they were hormonal teenagers/very young adults lolol. Not to mention they had already spent a lot of their lyrics on societal issues by this point, and the concept of this album piggy backs off the concept of the album before it so it makes sense that there are a lot of love songs. It's similar to Love Yourself series that way. They just hadnt figured out how to smoothen out the structure yet. I'm glad it's not going to take as long for the next albums because that wait was torture hahaha but I'm so happy your back at it with BTS albums! I'm going to miss them when you're done. Yes, I was so curious about your reaction to this one ever since you decided to go backwards with the bts albums! My fav is 100% also Rain, it’s so good and a real standout for me (it’s different to other parts of their discography too, not just within this album). They were young here, JK was 16 years old, Jin was like 21, so that explains a lot of the difference too, they’ve matured a lot in the past 9 years. But I love seeing the talent and energy of this early bts, they said this is the album they worked the hardest on (they recorded while filming a reality show in the US at the same time and often snuck into the bathroom to nap in between recording takes.) I hope you get to see the dance for danger at some point, their synchronisation is perfect. I saw in fancams that Suga performed his verse for cypher part 3 (and part 4) live for his tour, right? I’m obsessed with it honestly. I’m glad they don’t forget about (many) old songs even with their huge discography. Also, even now you can see the change between part 3 “fuck the haters” to part 4 “you should love yourself”.

Oh my god yesssss been waiting for u to get to this for so long!! I came as soon as I got the notification!! Hip Hop Lover/Phile is def in my top 10 fave BTS songs, I showed it to my brother (who was a music major and is a fan of hip hop and thus he studied it academically) and you would not believe how wide his eyes got when he saw all the name drops, particularly Eric B and Rakim! I have Seasonal Affective Disorder so I get pretty depressed when the weather is all gray and rainy and that’s exactly what Rain reminds me of, it’s also pretty high on my list of faves. In Cypher pt 3, j-hope’s “pippi” line almost always gets left untranslated which causes a lot of confusion. It’s supposed to be onomatopoeia for “beep beep,” thus the line is supposed to read “all the girls call me, beep beep” not “all the girls call me Pippi.” Embarrassed is also called Blanket Kick because in Korean, that’s an actual expression. You know how when you’re lying awake in bed and you just keep tossing and turning and hiding yourself under the blankets and throwing them off and so on as you think about an embarrassing situation that happened or an embarrassing thing that you said earlier that day, and you can’t stop yourself from thinking about it and you just want to hide away under your blankets to escape your embarrassment but you can’t? Yeah it’s that. I love Dark & Wild and I’m so happy u finally got to it!! I’m incredibly entertained by how shocked u are by how different their everything is in this era compared to everything else you’ve already heard and seen from them!!
