"Homecoming" REACTION - Buffy 3x5 Commentary (Early Access YouTube)

My personal least favourite episode of season 3, but I do love Cordy and Buffy bonding, and the way the Mayor is introduced. Great discussion on the topic of competition!

The pettiness, which is fully deserved and a nice reminder that Buffy is still a kid about becoming Homecoming Queen, is great. I loved that you paused to read the ridiculous whiteboard stuffβ€”I remember doing the same. The great character-building moments we get from Cordy and Buffy as a result are top-notch, and even smaller details, like how Giles is giddy that Buffy is having her moment, are all fabulous. This is just fun all the way. I have to be very careful here. But Harry Groener as the Mayor? The fact that you picked up on him being intriguing right away was superb. For me, he might be my favourite "bad guy" not only in the Buffyverse but in anything. This guy is a legend. Also, the next episode is *Chef's Kiss* As always, kudos for another great reaction, and happy to be on this journey with you.

Not a favorite episode of mine but you summarized it well. I admit it was fun and, for once, Cordelia plays a major role in it. Buffy tried to fit in Cordy's world as it reminded her of her old life and Cordelia had a glimpse of what it is to be a Slayer, helping her to understand Buffy more. The highlight of the episode for me is the return of M. Trick and the introduction of the Mayor, who was teased since last season. I really enjoy their respective personalities and think they make convincing and original villains. The Willow and Xander stuff is not that interesting to me. But then again, I'm probably just too old for teen romances and drama (especially for something as cliche as childhood friends realize they are attracted to each other). Once again I love Giles small moment when he said he wanted to be there when Buffy... and then corrected himself by saying "whatever will happen". Pretty sure he was gonna say "when Buffy will be crowned homecoming queen". He has such confidence in her he doesn't even think to an alternative at first. I love the relationship between Buffy and Giles.

Fun fact: the yellow stegosaurus-looking demon is played by stuntman Chad Stahelski, famous as the director of the John Wick films and Keanu Reeves' stunt double in the Matrix. He's a very influential figure in that circle, and by all reports just a really good guy. The Mayor is here at last, played by wonderful character actor Harry Groener who pops up in all kinds of roles, including a one-off appearance in Breaking Bad as the psychologist who talks to Walt after his "fugue state". I can't wait for you to get to know him, and as you say I like that he's a different flavour from previous villains. A little moment a find interesting that you didn't comment on is when Angel whispers "Giles", almost in horror, to himself after Buffy mentions him. It's a quick moment that speaks volumes for the trauma he's going and has gone through. Very excited for the next episode!

Ooh, band candy's next? That's one of my favs.. oh but there's so many top tier episodes in season 3, I'm excited each time I log in and see Tyler's added the next one!

Crystal Racklyeft

I think from mid season 2 to graduation is non stop amazing episodes. Overall best stretch of eps on the show

Zach Davis

Season 3 has so many great episodes

I'm with you on paper, but nothing beats a deck of cards fresh out of the wrapper.

Great reaction again. I feel like this episode is such a transitory one in everyone's character development and growth bc you see several of them on a crossroads and it's like "where is this going to lead." Love your commentary on competition too -very much. Thanks for spending some time on it. I've always been the type of person to back out when it turns into a competition bc I don't like hurting people or even getting hurt. But, as an adult, anytime I've tried to express my feelings towards competition I get back lash, so I just don't even talk about it anymore. Felt like I was the only one. And I agree with you about it not being a moral high ground or making judgements on other people's choices. I am just not an "the ends justify the means" kind of person. I think the episode really shows how dangerous competition can be and how it can hurt people. Also, this is the episode where I actually start to like Xander. I love seeing him actually "think" about what is right and wrong even if he is doing wrong things. It's like he's finally tapping into his brain for once.

after so much buildup... snyder getting on the phone and saying he has 'great news' for the mayor right after expelling buffy in 2x22, snyder saying "now wouldn't that be interesting" when joyce threatens to go to the mayor, this is a perfect introduction for him. him and mr trick are some of my favorite villains so i'm a real sucker for this episode!

esme

Love the Mayor as a character and the actor does such a great job with him.
