Thank you! Oh yeah, despite him being very problematic I did very much enjoy Spike this episode π

As usual, I love your reaction. It's a good thing that the show can allow itself to have an entire episode focus on the relationships between the characters. Because, we may have begun to watch for the monsters but, in the end, it is the brilliant writing and interpretations of those characters that made us stay.
On another note, I know Spike is evil and very unhealthy but I can't help but loving him. There is something incredibly fascinating and endearing in the way James Marsters is portraying him.

I love this episode a lot. Spike doing what he does best: come into town, be toxic and hilarious, and drop a few truth bombs, leaving chaos in his wake.
Thereβs disagreement on whether vampires can love. Angel says they canβt, but Spike and Dru would disagree. Personally I think Spike shows that vampires are fully capable of love, but perhaps only the selfish, problematic, toxic kind.
The Cordelia death fake out is a bit cheap, but hereβs some context for you, remembering that this was one of the first TV shows to have real-time fan interaction online - the writers read the fan forums and sometimes even replied, including J*ss. Basically, the Cordelia Hate (TM) was still strong online, and the writers wanted a moment that would say βSee! You were sad! You DO care about Cordelia!β Ofc itβs still petty but many of the best creative decisions of the show (including the two most creative episodes) came from J*ss being petty. Itβs a weird world.

Cordelia being impaled by a piece of rebar is something that actually happened to Charisma Carpenter when she was a kid. I hate that fake out as well, it's one of the cheapest tricks I've ever seen a show play on an audience lol

great commentary as usual! once again several of your insights are so incredibly perceptive and will come into play way later on in the series.

Spike has such feral cat energy. He came to town, got blindingly drunk, hung out with Buffy's mom, stirred up the relationship drama and read Buffy and Angel to filth, then left. Icon behaviour.
In all seriousness though, great commentary, especially on how Spike conflates love and possession. It's similar to what we saw with Angelus last season, where his love become obsession. Since vampires don't have souls, their ability to empathise and love unconditionally gets warped into a twisted version of what love is.

Love the reaction. Ohhh this is one of my top 10 favorite episodes. I know Spike is a bit unhealthy ...But hahahhahahahha ahhhh Spike behind Joyce making faces at Angel. :) :) The joy this brings. And all the serious stuff too. Thanks for the "friend zone" commentary. Couldn't agree more. Have a good one and stay safe.

So sad that you already knew about Cordelia surviving - this is a great episode in general but watching peopleβs reaction to the funeral scene is a true highlight!

Random question but are you liking the series? I assume so or you wouldn't keep going but just genuinely curious if you are liking it? This is a fan favorite ep as you can probably guess why *cough*Spike*cough*. More great episodes to come and some of the best imo in season 5 :)
