The Castle of Filstor

Hey everyone! Let me present to you the Castle of Filstor, the final map for the Viking Kingdoms theme. This month there will be only three posts, as I got swarmed with commissions and other work. From next month onwards you can expect four posts again :) Apologies for the inconvenience.

The southern shore of the Syne River is made up of rocky hills and steep cliffs. Filstor Castle sits on one such cliffside outcrop as it watches over the river, keeping the lands of Galladan safe. Or at least, it did for many years.

House Hyrgen has always served as caretakers of the castle. For many generations, Lord Hyrgen had resided in the keep, reporting to the leader of the Berren Clan. Never in its history did House Hyrgen fail to fend off invading armies or report as they approached—until three years ago. When Fjurmann marched south, Lord Hyrgen underestimated their strength. He did not send word for reinforcements as Fjurmann besieged the castle and allowed the invaders to cross the river and conquer Galladan.

This was the first time that the lords of Filstor failed to successfully fend off attackers, and Ratagund of Berren punished House Hyrgen for it. The lord was sentenced to death, and his family was stripped of their rank. Now, House Hyrgen is little more than a disgraced family, trying to make a living in the castle town they once ruled over.

Filstor does not stand out as one of the great castles in the world, though it does have some renown. Sitting on top of steep cliffs, with two drawbridges, it has several layers of defense. Whether it's packs of marauding werewolves, Olor shapechangers, or enemy armies, Filstor is able to withstand nearly any attack—as long as its lord calls for reinforcements in time.
