Bonus: "LegalEagle" Talks Big Red Machine/Taylor Swift

One of the biggest legal channels on YT just discussed Taylor Swift's record company horror story, which I was very surprised to hear the details of.

PS: Comments/Q&A will be coming out this week too.

Bonus: "LegalEagle" Talks Big Red Machine/Taylor Swift

Greetings from Denver! Yea, this video summarized it fairly well. So, a few points though. She has re-recorded album #2 Fearless (he misspoke and said her first album) and album #4 RED comes out in November. it is rumored that album #5 1989 is completed (there is a legal battle involving one of the songs) and she released one of the re-recordings from 1989 (Taylor's Version )last week Wildest Dreams. She can't re-record #6 Reputation until November 2022. Another point is that no one can currently use her music in a movie, commercial, etc because they need her permission and she has been rejecting them. Only her new music is allowed in commercials and movies, and this she has already allowed within this year Spirited Away and Match.com commercial as well as a few others. Another point is that she wanted to purchase he masters from Big Machine, but they refused out of greed. Instead offered to give her one of her back albums for every new album she put out. That was a no brainer, so she walked. They got pissed, but they knew that their company was worth nothing without her masters. So, they sold the company to Scooter along with her masters. This gets ugly because Scooter managed Kanye West. Kanye West has bullied Taylor for 10 yrs at that time so Scott (Big Machine) selling to Scooter was a big slap in the face, to give her masters to a man who essentially stood there and tried to destroy her. Then, Scooter sold to Shamrock Capital. Shamrock Capital was forced to sign an NDA to NOT contact Swift or to tell Swift of the purchase of the masters until after the deal was completed. They did reach out to Taylor immediately following the sale, and they wanted to work with her and she was receptive and had ideas and it would have moved forward. But, she read the contract and Scooter, although he sold to them, still receives royalties at some percentage under the contract with Shamrock. That was a non-starter. She reminded them, and it was public knowledge before they purchased her masters for +330mil, that she would be re-recording her entire catalog of her first 6 albums starting in November 2020. She put out Fearless (Taylors Version) in the spring 2021 and RED (Taylors Version) comes out in November. The songs are meant to sound nearly identical. Obviously, production is much better, brighter, and her voice has changed since she was a teenager and early 20-something, but its also gotten better. Some people like the original versions because that is what they are used to, but the versions are extremely similar for a reason. So that people will listen to the new versions in place of the older versions. Fearless (OG version) was and still is the most successful and award winning Country album in the history of country music. And, this version just added to that success with it going to #1. Another thing you may be interested in is how she changed streaming platforms with the Apple Letter and taking her music off the platforms until they agreed to paying artists more fairly, "dispute" with Spotify regarding royalties to artists, and really the biggest one of all, her negotiations with her label that if Universal Music Group sells its Spotify shares (850mil), the label will distribute some of the money from that sale to all of the artists it represents, “non-recoupable,” meaning it won’t count against their advances. Taylor Swift is just winning. People don't know these things she has done for the industry to help artists be paid for their art. She really is changing the industry. The Netflix documentary on Spotify thats in production is said to have a section on the impact of Taylor Swift on their business model. We are hoping she is making a documentary of her re-recordings. Can't wait to hear them all, before folklore and evermore, RED was probably the critics choice for best album. Rolling Stone has it in the top 100 albums in history.
