I feel like I'm obligated in some way to be slightly offended by Joyce, but she's too cute and I can't

@Shane: Re: the last paragraph, I think the difference (for Dorothy) is that her laundry lesson only involved Joyce herself, while this concerns private facts about another person (as public and well-known as those facts - well, maybe not the part about the weenus - might be to others).

Harold

I’m not sure what I think about this one. “Who is she?” Seems like a fair, even genuine question. “How do you not know?” Shouldn’t Dorothy understand the answer better before asking this? Joyce grew up in a deliberate fog and censorship about a lot of topics. My feeling is that rather than shine a ray of truth through the fog, Dorothy is deliberately pulling out the fog machine. Maybe the Keeners taught Dorothy all the proper etiquette and knowledge about trans folks, Joyce enjoyed no such instruction. And what Dorothy, unlocking the mysteries of masturbation for Joyce in the laundry room is appropriate, but telling Joyce something that by your own description was already on national news but Joyce’s parents somehow blocked is a bridge too far?

Funny how sliding back into this earlier mode for their relationship makes Dorothy seem to forget all her problems for a bit. I can almost forget them myself. The usual rule in sitcoms is "Deception is bad and leads to humiliating exposure," but I wonder if this might be an exception: maybe a little time feeling like she's "old Dorothy" is better therapy than any confession she could make. Putting her current identity crisis aside, she's still a highly intelligent young woman with good grades, employable in many fields, desirable as a friend and lover...she could ruin all that by fixating on her perceived failure, or she could accomplish quite a lot by chasing other dreams than the presidency. A lot of her current problems are problems of perspective; could this change in perspective help those problems? I'm not sure that's where this is going, but it's something to think about.

*squirts bottle of water* “no. That’s a bad Joyce. No.”

joe mcguire

Joyce, no.

Anna K

I think Carla would be thrilled because it means she gets to talk about herself!

Grace Kieser

Honestly, this is normal-person level of weird, not Joyce level of weird. Growth?

Bagge

Carla would be very offended by this conversation (because it demonstrates the existence of people who don't already know everything there is to know about her)

David Jackson

rip that Joyce still isn't counting booster and malaya as trans after yesterday's strip though

Sam G

my heart grew three sizes for Dorothy this day

Joe: So, what have you been up to today? Joyce: I stared at Dorothy's crotch for about a minute, then awkwardly left. Joe: ...I have complex and competing feelings about this.

I'm now mentally hearing panel 3 sung to the tune of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?"

Harold

Dorothy is in fine form here, conveying that both being trans and the much-more-private genital status are entirely off-limits for gossip. Joyce knows Carla as a woman, but the situation is reversed with respect to Jocelyne. Joyce's education proceeds.
