Some of their conversation was amusing and some was serious, and it served a dual purpose of getting to know Sandren better and learning more about the guild and the state of local affairs.
Right now, there was only potential between them, but Kelin was willing to see where it went.
She was beautiful, but it was her arrival at the right moment that had struck a chord of reliability ...

Kelin had to ask Gaius to move his head up so that he could see Sandren properly. His bones were too broken to do it himself.
His vision was still a mess and a new cut half an inch deep was pouring blood down his chest, but as he saw her a sense of relief arrived.
Sandren landed on the ground and her aura flared around her as she stared at Kolburn and Isla.
“Don’t mo...

On the way over to Serai and the others, Kelin glanced at Yaris’s body on the ground.
He’d never liked talking much with people he planned to kill, since it solved nothing. Talking to Yaris would only have given away why he wanted to get rid of him, which would have revealed the kids’ existence to anyone listening, like Isla Crest and her father.
With him dead, the main threat...

Kelin’s Perspective
The land blurred past Kelin in a streak of shadowy light, illuminated by that same purple and blue haze that was unique to the Shadow element.
He’d experimented with Shadow magic in the past, but not too much. It had always been foreign to the Soul and Fire elements he preferred.
Still, he couldn’t complain about the effect.
He sp...

Some Hours Earlier in Highmist. Orest’s Perspective.
It had been over two days since Yaris was arrested by that trash of a guild captain.
Orest had no ability to demand his release from the guild, so he’d been forced to ask the baron for help, and right now, he was waiting for news in the well-appointed parlor of a trading house that he didn’t like to visit.

When Kelin appeared on the other side of the dungeon portal, it was late in the night.
Although the sun was down, the western plains were still alive with heat. The tips of the golden-red grass looked like candles in the darkness, giving everything a faint glow that made it seem like twilight instead of true night.
The sound of fire crickets and whispering winds flowed through...

As Kelin crossed the desert, the coral towers of the city rose swiftly from the sands.
The sun was stretching late into the day, and the towers were lit by both the sunset and the flames of the sea in the distance. The light reflected from them in a thousand colors of the sea.
He didn’t know where the Coral Sea was, or if this Coralfire Tribe was even the original inhabitant...

It took Kelin two hours to gather everything from the battlefield, even with Gaius’s help.
The total count was fourteen Guardians, a dozen Trident Bearers, six Netcasters, six Shamans, seven Sandstars, seven Flying Coral Fish, six Sandfire Eels, and the Royal Sandfire Eel.
That was 59 monsters total.
The royal eel was the real treasure of the fight and it had died undergroun...

As Kelin headed farther in, the colors of the Coral Sea became even more intense and some of the coral pillars began to look sculpted, as if they’d been worked by artisans.
Here and there, some of them had been turned into buildings, with rooms winding up through the spires to a rooftop that overlooked the land.
The mana density and the size of the monster groups also began to inc...

In a Mansion in Highmist.
“My lord,” a butler said as he bowed, careful not to look his master in the eye. “One of the Wind Hunters was arrested by the Stars Alliance yesterday.”
“Which one?” The voice was calm and cultured as its owner looked up from his desk. “An important one, I assume, or you wouldn’t have come to tell me about it.”
“Yaris Nell...

The explosive clash of coralfire against soulfire went on until the Coralfire Guardian was tottering from fatigue.
Finally, it ran out of mana and rushed at Kelin with its trident raised. A faint aura of blue flame surrounded its entire body and accelerated its speed.
That didn’t stop a bolt of soulfire from searing through its head, sending it rolling across the ground.

Yaris’s Perspective.
Yaris was in a foul mood as he headed back to his family’s mansion in Highmist.
He’d thought for sure that he would manage to catch the mage at the dungeon, and then he’d be able to tear some information out of him with Walli’s help.
Information about why the guild was protecting those two brats who’d seen him at the orphanage and what...

The world shifted around Kelin as he appeared in the shallow cave above the Sirenflow River.
The roar of the river came from far below and a blaze of sunlight lanced through the opening, illuminating the cavern.
But this time, there were five people who should not have been there, standing at the edge of the cave.
The five of them barely fit inside the cave, packed shoul...

The energy from the elixir swept through Kelin like effervescent lightning, crackling with force as it saturated his meridians, bones, and everywhere else.
Its magic was unique and as it moved, it unblocked parts of his meridians and vital areas that had not yet been attuned by Soulfire Body Refinement, leaving new pathways crackling in its wake.
A wave of blazing soulfire followed ...

When Kelin found the third camp, it was markedly different from the other two.
Massive stones formed a ring around an arena that was roughly a hundred feet across. The ground between them was also stone, with the same rivulets of water running across it as everywhere else in the dungeon, but it had a battered look and was full of shallow pits, as if many battles had taken place there.&nbs...

It took Kelin about two hours to make his way through the forest and find another trail of undead that steadily increased in strength.

It took Kelin about an hour to find the first camp in the dungeon.
Along the way, he ran into several more patrols of stronger skeletal forces, which let him experiment a bit more with soul spells against the mages and spearmen.
The dungeon was continuing to send them at him steadily, and after the third group, he gained enough experience to reach Level 53.
It brou...

The plains came to an abrupt end at the banks of Sirenflow River, descending in a sheer cliff to the rushing water below.

As Kelin looked around the forest, birds chirped and the rustle of small animals sounded from the brush, marking a stark contrast to the dungeon.
His senses and Gaius’s confirmed that the area was clear. No other adventurers or assassins were around.

The drake was not pleased that they were eating the wraith shards right in front of it. They were basically shards of its own mana, so it saw it as an affront to its dignity.

The Poison Drake turned to look at Kelin and the others as they stopped. Its eyes locked onto them like a serpent’s sighting prey. The only emotions in its gaze were pride and cunning.

Thursday to Sunday, all day that they’re open.
Swing by and say hello!
I’ll be working on Wild Era while I’m here.
Matt Dinniman is signing Dungeon Crawler Carl right in front of my booth on Saturday (maybe other times too, at Third Place Books), so I need to decide how to distract him.
