Hit the strings relatively hard...at least harder than usually in this style of playing. A tight grip on the pick also helps to achieve the right kind of sound.

In my opinion one of the (many) best Lukather solos. Drop - D tuning. Pay attention on bar 107 (guitar solo) Transcription is in drop tuning. If you play the solo in standard tuning like i did, play those two notes on sixth string whole step lower. Frets 10 and 13.
