whew for a while i thought this was not going to be a decent illustration but it is starting to come along

nearly worked a hour on just the wings alone *whew*

well this is so close to being done it will take more eyes to point out what needs to be fixed

Mary and Clyde just cannot get enough of each other. all day every day....does anything actually get done on the farm?

ok now that the line has been cleaned up a bit i am concentrating on line weight and shadow. i do use the 3d render that is currently hidden to assist on where to place the overall shadows but i do not follow it 100%. this i getting set up for Lazy Nezumi Pro with crisp supple line work. lets just see how OCD i can be on these line huh?

now as this will be a line work based drawing and not 'painted' i will be working a lot more on weight and volume in so there will be a few updates that show the progression

remember to flip you image from time to time, even if you are using a 3d model as a guide it still helps you from "skewing" your image. another thing to remember is to "play to your strengths" you may noticed that the feet have been more painted than the rest of the body. that is because at this time that method was easier to get the right shape then a line sketch was. this is just the sketch ...

now one thing (amongst many) i must note is that you can put anything on different layers and focus on that section alone right here i went just for the hands and hid everything else because hands like faces are very important to tell the story of the illustration even if it is just cheesecake

i stay very loose starting out as i can use as many temp layers as i want and need to work in the details, fix anatomy issues and focus the gesture
2015-01-17 17:04:27 +0000 UTC View Post
ok so obviously i turn off all the layers and lower the opacity of her so i can start sketching

ok here i am working on another blog like tutorial where i will rework this illustration into a line weight more animeish style with the help of Lazy Nezumi Pro and explain the whats and whys of my process

now by adding in just a few things like a textured overlay , clipping masked multiply layer and a clipping mask normal layer for highlights can really make a difference

updated with body and boot fixings but take a look how it looks with some extra textures even before finishing
2015-01-17 15:47:16 +0000 UTC View Post
i tend to use textured overlay layers and color layers to help unify and saturate my colors although this is far from done i tend to put most the end details in so i can keep my visual goal in mind
2015-01-17 15:18:39 +0000 UTC View Post
as you can see i flip the image and keep working on the crop and drop methods shown before when i get more done i will merge the layers and continue painting from there

masking off the area i want to work on and copy-pasting it onto its own layer gives me the option to just refine the part i want to work on without the visual distractions. i would recommend using this method in conjunction with more traditional ones in order to keep everything unified
2015-01-17 14:34:05 +0000 UTC View Post
sketch and refine the area of interest as needed. note that although i am using a black line i will be changing it to a color in order to blend it in later
2015-01-17 14:30:07 +0000 UTC View Post
turn off the layers you don't need and lower the opacity
2015-01-17 14:27:51 +0000 UTC View Post
ok here is a little tidbit that may help you in refining illustrative issues are you go without spoiling your work flow. looking at just her arm we can see the overall gesture is not very interesting but say you don't want to stop all your painting while you go into line work mode and add flair

instead of just using a smudged out photo for a background i decided to reall push myself to make a detailed decent and expressive forest

well been up since 5am and ready to start the day War is an old character of mine from about 15 years ago from a story called "knights of the Apocalypses" filled with cheesy cliches and nonsensical plot holes (so pretty much the same as i do now) one of nearly a thousand engineered super soldiers thrust into a world of Magic they form an army to conquer the world in an attempt to "restore order"...
