Announcement and December Stream Requests

Announcement time:

I'm going to be retiring the $20 stream commission tier after February 2023. It's had some issues that I haven't found any great solutions to, namely the fact I am chronically non-punctual and there's no way to automatically flush the tier every month and give new people a chance to get a commission slot. I don't currently have plans for a new commi...

October Doodles

"Jay," you say, "you've been doing Inktober and posting art to social media every day. Surely you don't have many extra sketches to share this month."

"Well you see," I reply, "I'm actually in an elaborate Saw trap where if I stop drawing for more than an hour I die"

These are not in chronological order, and I included comic planning pages because I figured some of you might find th...

Runaway to the Stars: Page 6

While greyscale is much faster and less of a hassle, one of the few things that makes me miss color comics is the fact Talita's eye shine is red-orange like a crocodile. Centaurs are real spooky in the dark.

Another one! The first appearance of The Runaway, and thus technically Bip. Also the first appearance of bug ferrets, as funny little doodle guys.

Runaway to the Stars: Page 4

This one took a while because my brain has been full of bees, and also I had to finish fiddling with the 3D model of the modular frontloader. The initial 3D sketch was made by MechMonster during an unrelated art trade Secret Santa, I just mashed it around to make it more similar to the vehicle design in the rough pages...

Comic Excerpt: Sirawit the Wingman

Procrastinating on finished pages by drawing scenes from the wrong book again. Sirawit tries to be helpful and do some investigation on Talita's crush, Talita would really rather he not.

Sirawit grew up in a co-species city and is really familiar with humans but they frequently flub the specifics or don't get what's taboo or not in comparison to avian culture. Shyam has not met many ...

September Sketches

Some more fountain pen doodles. Outfit and character art, mostly. Still trying to figure out my main characters' entire closets, because I think it's great fun for some reason. I feel like I am getting better at drawing with no eraser and combining ink colors.

Been busy this month with moving apartments, which is a less of a hassle than it could have been because we're basically just movi...

Runaway to the Stars: Page 1 and 2

Well, it's happening folks. 307 pages to go. I'll be sharing the first 3 chapters here as they get finished; they'll be subject to some minor edits in between now and publishing, but pretty much all I have left to do is finish the damn thing. I think it turned out pretty good! I am impatient and want to share it!

Once again I'm cagey about giving time estimates, since rough pages took abo...

Actually Making a Talita Ref, Apparently

Took a break from drawing her work gear to draw her in Cute Little Outfits and now I have something approaching an actual character reference. She owns two dresses, a warm weather and cool weather one, one purse, and one set of fancy shoes. She doesn't wear them very much. I'm not sold on the sunhat yet, I need to figure out how to make it not wobbly. Centaurs don't have a big knobby head that ...

WIP: Talita Spacesuit and Fall Harness

Badly needed to update Talita's spacesuit ref, the old one was from before I figured out how I wanted to draw centaurs. I still need to fiddle with the details and figure out the connection point for the liquid cooling system between the two body pieces but this is the gist of it. The nose of the helmet can be swapped out for a longer one when she has antlers.

The fall harness has tw...

WIP Animation: Talita Laugh

Trying to figure out a "laughter" response for centaurs, going with something like this for now. It's a semi-involuntary head bob/toss accompanied by a voiced subsonic pant. The trunk curl is a normal centaur smile, the mouth smile is a Talita thing. Predictably, she's kind of self conscious about her laugh and will usually hold her face to suppress the head bob response. Talita also occasional...

Runaway to the Stars: Rough Pages Update

I had been hoping to start finished pages before the end of July, but I'm currently waiting on a commissioned 3D model of the junkyard and launch loop, which I need for the first scene! In my impatience, I have bitten the bullet and finally started learning Blender for myself, which should make this process faster in the f...

How Talita Blows on Soup

Taking a break from editing book chapters to draw lesbian fluff comics. Someone on tumblr asked how Talita blows on soup with her respiratory setup. The trunk is a multiuse organ.

The silk cheese knots are made from the nutritional silk of those duck-goat livestock that I need to finish drawing sometime. Shyam is having something vaguely similar, paneer cheese (in curry with roti). They'...

Launch Loop Scale and Dirtball Work Site

Figuring out the actual scale of things in the junkyard so I can start drawing finished pages for the first few pages of the book! Which is coming soonish-- hoping to start by the end of July? The first third of those book pages will be posted here as they are finished.

Globe Moss and Frog Bunnies of the Sea Ice

Some miscellaneous worldbuilding for the avian homeplanet. The poles both have permanent sea ice fields, which are difficult to colonize for life for the same reason sand dunes are. The surface constantly shifts (although much slower than a dune) as it's shaped by wind, currents, melting, and precipitation.

In the North pole, the dominant ecosystem on the ice is globe fields, which ...

More Avian Refs, Family Systems Lore

Polars and skimmer, plus bonus drawing of the tail display in flightless brights and courting behavior-- where two partners point their beaks upwards and twist their necks, clicking the lower beaks together. It's something like... a very formal kiss? More intimate versions involve neck contact and beak preening.

Lapcat Painting

Happy late Pride month, here's a gay little watercolor and ink painting. I'm trying to get myself to learn how to do watercolor on actual watercolor paper instead of shitty printer cardstock, but I haven't had a lot of time to doodle outside NDA work recently. I'd also like to get better at painting skin tones and lighting/values in watercolor, as a kid I mostly used alcohol markers to color ph...

WIP Comic: Fly in the Runaway

Idrisah is dysfunctionally compassionate, Talita likes being helpful, and Gillie has a big gamer chair.
