[RISE FROM THE ASHES] Vol.3 Ch.13
Playing catchup on this since I was mulling over a bunch of changes to everything across the chapters so far. One more chapter and that'll be a wrap for the retranslation, and I can charge back into the background lore and all that good stuff! The final version will include chapter artwork as well as the afterword with Takahashi, two exposition articles, and roundtable with the creative team, s...

And that does it for the second volume of Gaia Gear! Finally got some decent movement on the plot in these last couple of chapters, so kicking off the third volume should prove interesting! I need to finish tweaking the images for this volume, so I'll put up a "final" volume once that's situated. I went back and cleaned up some wonky changes that Grammarly made to names that I missed earlier on...

For those who caught the Gunpla interview with Kawaguchi on my site the other day, one of his comments highlights just how influential G Gundam was at "rebooting" Gundam after they already tried to do just that with V Gundam (and ultimately watched it severely underperform). Anyway, this serves as a bit more of a behind-the-scenes info dump about what was going on and where things were going an...

That's a wrap on volume two!
I still need to tweak all the old-school images for the last pages, but I'll work on getting those fixed up when time allows. Couple of things to note, yes, Horst's last name is different from the movie. That threw me, too. Also, Quess calls Amuro a "langage," which is the French word for "general phenomenon."
I went back and fixed several name...

Gundam's popularity has spawned a wealth of model kit-related content, from magazine serializations to novels and photo stories. One such project, spearheaded by Umanosuke Iida, who directed the latter half of the 08th MS Team anime, graced the pages of Dengeki Hobby Magazine from January 1999 to July 2001. With text by Toru Sonozaki and illustrations by Yukitoshi Hoya, this series promised to ...

Apologies, things are a bit backlogged at the moment. I have a couple of IRL issues going on (everyone seems to be having a heart attack as of late), so text mediums are a little easier to manage at the moment. Things should balance out, and manga will resume shortly! Until then, here's a funny (?) little parody novel from the pages of OUT magazine. This publication was known for pushing the en...

Back in 2021, I did a quick and dirty breakdown of how Sentinel got its start and set out to debunk a bunch of nonsense that had been parroted in the community forever. As I'm going through and basically translating everything from the mook (sans the model pages) as I wind down the last few chapters, I figured it was time to post the full translation of that article here for everyone to read. I...

Working on some more of the background material from the Gundam Sentinel mook, here's a little outline from the author regarding how the novel fits into the broader spectrum of Gundam and where its roots can be traced back to. Indicated above is one of the pages from the same directory

A couple more additions to the lore pile this week. It's amusing how this publication pretty much spins 08th MS Team off as a film of the OYW. I guess that's one way to rewrite history! :P More manga tomorrow then I'll be stepping out for a mini-vacation!

I've slowly been painstakingly recreating the Anaheim Journal official guidebook, but one of the more interesting (if not contentious) points of lore that comes from it is Melanie Hue's background. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Tomino's original dated/stereotypical draft notes for the character. This offers some further background notes on him. There were a couple of names mentioned in...

A few more changes compared to the movie version. All in all I feel like this plays out much better than the film, but that's just me. Astute readers will notice that, yes, Tomino did reuse dialogue from Beltorchika (and, in some instances, descriptors). Two more and that's a wrap for this volume. I should have that situated next month!

The following one-shot was the second "chapter" in the Silhouette Formula project back in the 90s. While this was intended to serve as a bridge from F91 to Victory Gundam, nothing else came of it. We'll likely see more in the future, though. With that, here's some data I translated on the Cluster Gundam courtesy of the 1/100 model kit and additional information:

Since it's easier and probably faster than downloading from Mega, here's the older release of Vol.1 for those interested!
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE F91 ERA PROJECTS
When plans for F91 were originally kicking around, the assumption was that it was going to be a TV series. So around August 1989, Okawara designs a rather orthodox Gundam based on that assumption. However, ...

Halfway through! Chapter.10 will clock in at 64 pages, for what it's worth. Random difference between these two (mainly because it was split in Ace, if I recall correctly). Other backlogs to follow this week!

Seeing that F90FF wrapped up and I retranslated F90, it's time for yet another much-needed redo of an older series: SF91! Yes, that older version is pretty cringe. This time, I'm switching things up just a smidge! I've included the prologue from the original serialization in CYBER COMIX magazine from August 1992. For whatever reason this was never included in the print compilation (or ebook ver...

Translation note time!
In this chapter, when Zaji gets word that there's a message from HQ, the two messages exchanged are actually variations of Chinese idioms (translated into Japanese). Oddly enough, they both have the same idiomatic meaning in Chinese. If my Google research is accurate, 绳锯木断 (shéng jù mù duàn) and 水滴石穿 (shuǐ dī shí chuān) would be the originals...
