Watercolor Sketch

The Sketch I did in the Sketchbook Saturday. I'm going to do a painting of this eventually.

Sketchbook Saturday-Watercolor painting, Imagination, the deeper reason for art

Welcome to another Sketchbook Saturday where I work in a sketchbook and just kind of free from ramble about whatever and  a little bit of narration about the process.

This is a watercolor sketch of an image that came to me right as I was falling asleep. I did this a few months ago before I got distracted by the famous hard drive incident. I will eventually develop this idea into a pa...

Fantastic Beast Mini Study -WIP

I really like old dragons and monsters from Medieval artwork and Renaissance artwork. I like the amalgamation of different animals to create a fantastic beast.

for my fantastic beast prompt piece I'm trying to use that amalgamation technique (amalgamation just means combine or unite different things to create something new) but combine some different creatures that are native to the deser...

Finished Beer Can Commission-Painting Walkthrough

Here's the final painting that they'll use on the beer can in October. Again, I filmed the entire process so this post will be in video form as soon as I can edit it.

The Brewery asked if I wanted to do this piece in July for a beer that comes out in October. I thought since it was October I would have more time to work on it. The last week of July they told me they wanted something the f...

Colored Pencil on Toned Paper-Sweetie sketch

I really like drawing on this blue toned paper. It's a very satisfying paper to draw on. With this one I just stuck to colored pencil (no acrylic or watercolor.)

Something about this drawing feels a little too cartoony to me. I like the movement and texture of the face but I think I added too many thick hard lines. it looks too outlined.

But that doesn't matter as long a...

Colored Pencil Sweetie from Texture

I did a texture rubbing on some toned blue paper with a light yellow colored pencil then created this character out of that.

I actually started this drawing a few weeks ago and abandoned it. I don't drink but after the show this weekend I felt like I had a hangover and I couldn't do anything with my brain so I just worked on this drawing and the song in the video.

Frame Surgery at a Gallery Opening

The frame for her came in the day of the show opening. The canvas sticks out a little on the back, so I had to put these little step things on to secure her in the frame.

I got to the gallery, ripped her off the wall and went and did a little frame surgery.

I love this frame. It's from a vendor I've never used before, so I wasn't sure, but I think it compliments the piec...

For your ears only

Here's the private playlist where I'll put my music.

If you like the music in my videos this is where you can stream them!

So far I've only added all the songs from this year, but I'll start going back in time and adding more from the past. I'll try and stay on top of it by adding songs as I make them and posting the links to them with the time-lapse videos.

Obviously li...

Finished Commission- Lust and Remorse

I filmed a ton of footage for this so I'll eventually make a video the process. But here's a quick little break down.

Painting Walkthrough/ Tutorial-Old Wound

In this video I break down the process of this painting into stages. Idea, Planning, Sketching/Underpainting, Grayscale painting, Color, and a little reminder that it's never too late to change your mind.

I started with the idea.

Sometimes I just start a painting without any thought. Trying to find something in the paint that speaks to me as I move along. That's my default way to ...

Old Wound II-Timelapse+Music

I'm doing a walkthrough/tutorial about the process of this painting for Tenor and up Choir members. I'm trying to get that done ASAP. But for now...enjoy this beat I made! I think it's one of my best ones.

Yummy Yummy-Timelapse+Music

Mixed media drawing (Acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, Gouache) on toned blue paper. Time-lapse with some music I made.

I wouldn't recomend mixing all these materials. The acrylic is too slick of a surface, so to get the colored pencil to stick on it you really have press into it. Then the watercolor doesn't want to stick to the colored pencil or the acrylic. So you have to use i...

Yummy Yummy - Mixed Media on Toned Blue Paper

I have this painting in a pretty great frame right now. Like an idiot, I forgot to get a picture of it in the frame. You can see it in the picture of my new set upl at the hive from the other day. I'll have to take a new picture when I go this weekend.

For this drawing I used Acrylic, colored pencils, watercolor, and gouache. And I wouldn't recommend mixing all those together.

Diane Arbus-Art Life & Lives

In this installment of Art Life & Lives, we’re going to be talking about the photographer, Diane Arbus (1923-1971.)

Diane is most known for her portraits of “side show freaks.” But she photographed a wide variety of subjects from nudist colonies, patients in mental asylums, eccentrics of all stripes, trans people, cross dressers, strippers, wealthy families, pseudo places, and m...

New Set up at the Hive

My space at the Hive is like a mini art gallery/ used book shop. I have a little shelf where I resell books I find. I look for books based on their covers. I love books with a classy illustration on them. 📚

For now, this piece is in the Choir only shop.

Surrealist landscape commission

Here’s the other commission I’m working on at the moment.

I did a painting based on some perspective sketches I did for the intro to drawing bad art course.

The idea was to show that perspective isn’t just useful for buildings, cars, furniture and other subjects with straight edges. It’s also good for noodly, blobby, organic forms.

Anyway, I enjoyed the sketches I did...

Beer Can Design- Commission WIP

I got two commissions I have to finish this week so videos are on the back burner for right now.

This is for a beer can design for a local brewery. I designed another can for them about 5 years ago. They're great to work with.

Pictures are arranged from most recent to least recent. At this point I'm about to start adding in the color.

It's for a limited edition IPA...

Found Object Process Walkthrough + Trickster Mythology, Picasso, Better Call Saul

I started with the hunt, I took a picture of the uno card, designed the painting in photoshop, painted it and framed it.

I really enjoyed doing this prompt. It reminded me of this interesting book called Trickster Makes this World, about the archetype of the trickster and how it relates to art.

It reminded me of it in two ways.

First the trash. The Uno card had fallen ou...

You never know which paintings will be left unfinished- gold star trickster Process

I've been working on this painting for about a year. I kept getting distracted with other projects.

first I painted an underpainting of the figure. I wanted to give the wall behind her a cement texture that I could carve the coyote head into. I did that with course molding paste.

Molding paste is a thick painting medium that has the consistency of cake frosting. It comes...

Value Demo: INTRO TO DRAWING BAD ART

I added a value scheme to a drawing that a frustrated 6 year old made in one of my classes. I built a crude maquette based on the drawing, put a light on it and used the maquette to inform how I organized my values.

In this video I do a little recap of the lesson video, then start the drawing, I sped the video up towards the end (and added a little bonus music.)

This was admittedly ...

Value: Intro to Drawing Bad Art

In this intro to drawing bad art lesson I'll be going over Value. What value is, how to create value relationships, and organize values to convey light and dark.

Value is one of the most powerful tools in your artistic toolkit. I compared perspective in drawing to rhythm in music. To continue the metaphor, value and color are to drawing and painting what notes are to music.
