Something New!

I've had this binder since May. It's where I put all of the character sketches, snippets of story, and research I've prepared for the book that's been simmering in my head for two years. The book doesn't have a name yet, so for the last year it's just been referred to as "The Book."

Now that all of the bookplates from 2018-10-01 05:36:50 +0000 UTC View Post

The! Books! THE!! BOOKS!!

Guys, I got the dummies for the exteriors of the books, and they. are. perfect.

When I photoshopped the mockup for these last year (backwards, woops!), I was worried that the mockup would look better than the end product. No sir, no ma'am. The end product BLOWS THE MOCKUP AWAY.

If you're someone who preordered the books on Kickstarter (before you ask: YES, they'll be available to ord...

Fast Fast Figure

I've had to skip figure drawing for the last couple of weeks, but I'll be making it up in spades now that I'm back at The Animation Workshop in Denmark! I'm making this post public for everyone; this is the stuff that I share with the $5+ patrons. :)

Because this place is full of animation students (I'm in the neighboring buildin...

GWS Bonus Strip: Our Boobies Are Magic

Happy 2018, guys!! I'm pushing to finish the last few bonus strips for the GWS books before I leave for Denmark on Friday; I just finished coloring this one. Fresh off the coloring presses for ya.

If you wanna read it in context, you'll want to start here at #1542 - the bonus strip happens righ...

**Patreon is NOT rolling out its new fee structure**

Hoo boy, it has been a long week for creators who use Patreon, but it has probably felt like a decade to the people who work at Patreon. They fucked up hard, and they paid for it in backlash. To their credit, they spent the last week making a LOT of phonecalls to their angriest creators.

I don't want to put too much time into this post, but I just wanted to confirm, from my end, that both Jack (...

GWS Bonus Strip #1: Vegetarianism

Hey, pals! I'll be sharing the bonus strips for the big hardcover GWS compilation all December long for $3+ backers. I'll make this first one a public post so you all can see it. :)

Art Night/Cat Night

I started hosting a private Art Night event at my house on Friday nights this year, and it's done wonders for my a) social life and b) happiness, which c) might be the same thing. I've learned in the last few years that I'm not made up of 100% introvert, and that a lot of my depression through my thirties has stemmed from a lack of human beings in my life (no offense to my cats).

Speaking ...

Catober Muses

As much as I love Inktober, it's always hard for me to keep up halfway through the month, because I'm usually putting all my spare time into my Halloween costume. I only got to #15 this time around, but it was a fun excuse to practice drawing Ellie and Pip!

Here are the photos I used for reference on some of the Inktober/Catober art. I don't do Ellie justice - she's a gorgeous cat - but do...

"THAT IS SO MUCH MONEY!", a Kickstarter story

Someone recently made this post in the GWS comment section (yes, there's a comment section, and yes, believe it or not, it's generally civil!):

So are these books just not profitable at all? You're not the first web cartoonist (e.g.) I've seen say "I've had a hugely successful Kick...

Help create the GWS Omnibus!!

Hey, friends! As you may already know, the final, complete collection of GWS - in two giant books - is under way and scheduled to be available by the end of this year.

What you may NOT know is that I'm creating a few new strips to slip in here and there throughout the old strips!

I'm re-reading all 2,008 original strips now, making note of clarity &continuity changes that need to...

High School Hazelnuts #1: My Car Shakes

Soooooo... some things changed from early Hazelnuts to later Hazelnuts and GWS! In this old strip I did in 1998, Hazel has a father figure of some sort... and I think those are the prototypes for Jamie and Reese in panel one.

(I'll have to share some art from college when we get to the end of this series; I drew Hazel and Jamie into a few college art projects, and they were VERY different ...

How to Make A Watercolor Portrait

Hey friends! Our regular figure drawing class was canceled last-minute last night, but on Tuesday, Michael  and I tried something new (well, new for me): we hired a model for JUST a portrait session. I decided to bring my watercolors for the night and show y'all how I use them.

I should note that I am N...

Final Fast Pose Evening

This was actually from last week - my last night of intense FAST figure drawing! The organizer had us do 10-second gestures that I thought would be impossible, but inevitably just warmed me up for the 30-second poses.

This model was SO GOOD (big surprise there!) - he kept making his head and face part of the pose, which is something a lot of models forget to include, but can make or break a good...

The Fastest Poses (Figure Drawing)

The drawing sessions here at the Drawing Academy in Viborg have the fastest poses I've ever been challenged to draw! We start out with a TON of 30-second poses, move on to 1-minute poses, 2 minutes, maybe 3, and then break and start over with 30 seconds again.

At the end we'll do a 5 minute, which is always what I want in the beginning, but by the time we get to it I'm so revved up I just ...

Viborg sketches

Hey y'all! I'm still teaching here in Viborg, Denmark and I have been EXHAUSTED all week! Despite that, I've taken every single opportunity to socialize with the other teachers and the absurdly talented, friendly, karaoke-crazed students that has been extended to me thus far.

Last night there was a class dinner downstairs, where a few of the students prepared BEAUTIFUL open sandwiches, a t...

Hey y'all! Just a quick post (apologies to those who follow me on Twitter and Instagram and have already seen this): here's the curriculum for next week's class! New Goal: Making Comics

Welp, that's really it! I'm ready to make comics again, this time without ads. I've thought it over for months, and I think Patreon is the best way to do it.

If you're already a patron, you'll see every non-fiction comic I make, assuming there are enough pledges that I can reach my goal. If the goal can't be reached I'll probably find another way to pay my bills while I work on my next project, ...

Hourly Comics Day

Finally, for maybe (?) the first time ever, I successfully accomplished an entire Hourly Comics Day!  In the past I recall starting two or three panels, and then just having to drop the whole thing.

And now I remember why: it's time consuming! You spend 30-40 minutes doing stuff to write about, and then the other nearly-half of an hour recording it on paper.

So I didn't ge...

WHOOOO BOY this one took WAY longer than I intended it to! But the person who commisioned it has been waiting FOREVER for this, so I was happy to put in the extra effort. Plus, I was basically experimenting while I went, so it doubled as practice. :)

One of those experiments was THE PAPER, which as you may notice from the photos WARPED LIKE MAD so I will stop using it for commissions! It's from ...

Instead, I stayed home and did paintings of protesters for anyone who donated $150+ to Planned Parenthood, which I picked due to our preside...
