I often come across really interesting lovely characters, that I really want to draw and try something new with. Here I was going for a dark anime style background with a lot of neon and glow, it didn't quite work out as I imagined, I don't have enough skill for that yet, but it still looks very cozy, I'm glad I tried.

I had this idea in my head for a very long time, Gabriel in a pirate outfit and with birdie on her shoulder. It was a bit tricky to get the shading right, she is mostly in the dark, and I still had to convey volume and shape somehow, there's a lot of form shadow and bouncelight, those things are difficult to figure out right off the top of my head, and it took me a few attempts. This drawing took more time and was more difficult than I expected. I ended up redoing the background several times, trying different compositions and looking for reference, and after I settled on plain grass it still took a few tries to light it well, so it doesn't look crooked or warped. I still have a lot to learn about colors, shading and how to represent depth, shapes and volume on canvas....

This was supposed to be a fun and happy drawing for myself, but it went horribly wrong. I know that artists should draw something for themselves at least sometimes, instead of exclusively commissions, but I ended up feeling even more hurt and devastated..
