Warm-ups!
The fact is, it's been a while since I've drawn most of the JL8 characters with any degree of regularity--Diana hasn't appeared in the strip since #224--and as such I thought it'd be a good idea to spend some time warming back up by drawing some random head sketches. These were actually done maybe a week or so ago, as I've actually started drawing #264 proper (the first page is fully p...

Having gotten the script written, the thumbnails drawn, and the pages laid out, I'm now doing a little bit of visual development pre-production work before I sit down to draw in earnest.
This update takes place out on the playground area behind the school, as alluded to by Barry in the previous strip. However, the Schwartz Elementary playground/backlot has only been seen a few times over the cou...

Here we go: layouts!
If you recall from Update 03, I discussed how I produce thumbnails of panels as I work off the script, but don't really have an idea as to how I'll turn those individual panels into full comic pages. Well, here's how I do that.
As you may've seen in Update 03, each of the little thumbnail images had a corresponding number attached, indicating its panel number--which is...

Alright, so a quick recap: the next JL8 update is going to be huge (a total of 18 pages, but I think I can break it down into a few more manageable pieces, but either way, it's a real big update). Obviously, the larger the update, the longer it will take for me to produce it. As such, I want to provide you all with some content in the interim, and I thought maybe a spoiler-free peak behind-the-sce...

So as I discussed yesterday, I'd wrapped up the script for the next update and it was EXCEPTIONALLY long. Well, today I began the process of thumbnailing said script (which for those who don't know, it's when you draw tiny little versions of the page so you get idea how you want it to look; panel layout, shot composition, etc. etc.) and we've arrived at, drumroll please...
A whopping eighteen pa...

I just got done scripting the next JL8, #264.
It is so, SO long.
It's actually pretty rare for me to be so far behind on scripting an update, but despite knowing the general outline of what I want to happen and where I want the story to go, I just wasn't very sure on how to execute it. That, and I knew that it was going to take serious writing time, so I was hesitant to attempt to juggle w...

I figured this may be worth posting: warm-up sketches are just that--warm-ups. I try to draw stuff that seems like it would be fun at the moment; it makes no sense to try to get ready for work by slogging through a drawing you're not interested in. However, even fun stuff can get boring once you feel like you're all stretch...

Even after all these years, Karen is still the JL8 character I have the most trouble with. I feel like her design is always shifting ever so slightly as I try to capture the version I see in my head. As such, I feel like she's also the one that requires the most "warming up" before I tackle a page that includes her.

I’ve been hopping around this page because I wasn’t terribly excited about tackling these establishing shots. Two hours later and here they are (about 15 minutes for panel one, an hour and 45 minutes for panel two).

Apologies for the edit. I had to splice the image together from two separate scans, and I only know how to color in Photoshop, not fix photos. Maybe one day.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you’re not reading My Hero Academia, you should really fix that.

A humble-yet-solid haul from my trip to HeroesCon. We've got My Hero Academia, Vol. 11-13, as well as the Devilman, Classic Collection Vol. 1.
I feel like I've evangelized about My Hero Academia a number of times, but I cannot stress how great it is, and I PARTICULARLY feel that if you like my work, you'd absolutely love it. The elevator pitch is that in the future, most of the human population ...

Hey everyone! Just wanted to post this up for those unaware. I'll be at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC this weekend. I'll have prints, buttons, original art, and I'll be taking commissions as well. Hope to see some of you there!

For the first time ever, I'm posting JL8 for my patrons first, if for nothing else but as an apology for the lengthy delay. I'm hoping I can get back to a more regular schedule sooner than later, but that's for another post, perhaps.

In a super last-minute turn of events, I WILL be attending HeroesCon this coming weekend in Charlotte, NC. As such, I'll be opening up my pre-show commission list as of right now, if anyone is at all interested. I apologize for the terribly short notice, but as I said, this wasn't expected at all. I hope to see some of you there!

I know I've posted this before, but given the week it seems a lot of people are having, it seemed appropriate to share again.
Depression is always a serious issue, but two high-profile suicides back-to-back--Kate Spade and then Anthony Bourdain--feels like it's worth addressing head-on once more.
I won't try to preach, as I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but I do know that I'v...

Here's a commission that took forever, haha. The client requested all the major Flashes, including the New 52 variants of characters like Jay Garrick and Wally West. This has actually been colored, but the client hasn't seen the finished colors yet, so I'll hold off on posting that until he gets to see them first.

Here we have a very cool commission concept that I was thrilled to be a part of: what if Jack Kirby designed Batman? This one was a lot of fun to do. Not entirely sure how decent a job I did of channeling Jack's design sensibilities, but like I said, it was a good time.

Here's a little commission I just wrapped up for a friend (who commissioned it for HIS friends, who just had a child) of Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Jade. The blocks were giving me a TON of trouble, so I figured them out by taking a photo of stacks of dice and lightboxing over the photo. So if you ever need to draw stacks of building blocks but don't want to draw out all the perspective, there's ...

Hello, everyone. Just wanted to drop in and post a preview of the upcoming JL8 #261. It's been...time-consuming, to say the least.
Honestly, I was wary of posting this because frankly, I'm embarrassed at how little content I've been able to produce lately, and I didn't really want to post anything until I had a finished product, but I've decided that I want to take the month of June and push mys...

Good morning! I've recently begun trying to make a habit of producing warm-up drawings before I go on to work properly for the day, but I'm having a hard time coming up with things to draw, so I thought I could ask you all for suggestions. Reply to this post with a character you'd like to see me draw, and perhaps I'll choose it as my warm-up subject! I'll be sure to post the drawings once they're ...
