Color Tips

Here's a commissioned painting I finished some time ago and I wanna share a few tips regarding it

Using saturation to shift color temperature

I color picked some areas in the image to show how completely gray colors act as cools in this context, and they would have be...

Pumpkin Knight Breakdown/Tips

I did this image as a collab with a friend - here's his original drawing that I painted over:

Get rid of bad ideas early! - it's hard to overstate how important that is. Here's how I initially started this painting:

Gandalf Breakdown and Tips

Here's another little breakdown of an illustration I finished a few days ago.

Value Grouping

When doing an image, the value range of each object or plan is within your control, and having different values creates dramatically different visual results. This painting's values are limited to pretty much just the lights, along with some midtones in the shadows and...

Focal Points ad Infinitum

Figured I'd share another example of being clear about your focal points. Remember, think in terms of contrast sliders- you've got value, shape and color and you can have more or less of each, but your focal point will always be that which has the biggest total amount of contrast.

When you look at a painting, it's a great habit to always seek the focal points and different tools tha...

Wizard Tower Breakdown

Here's an environment painting commission I finished recently, and I wanted to share a few tips related to it.

Hierarchy of focal points - regardless of the subject matter, try to have a clear order of focal points, most importantly a primary and secondary one. The focal points are literally just areas of the biggest contrast - and your main tools for cre...

Duck Goblin Breakdown

Here's a little breakdown of a character painting that I finished yesterday:

It's very simple compositionally (which is what I had intended, since it's meant for a DTIYS challenge), but there are still interesting decisions and considerations that had to be made.

Choosing a pose tha...

More Process

I enjoyed working on this one because this sort of high-key, light and colorful stuff isn't something I do very often. I'm pretty happy with those reflected lights (especially how the whole side of the owlbear facing the dress is so red, as well as some of the reflected colors on the girl's skin. Reflected light really adds a lot of interest and believability :D

And a little warmup/cool down goblin in there as well :D

DnD Commission Process

With this one I had a separate drawing as reference, in part because I didn't want to have to get rid of the lines, but instead to focus more on the brushstrokes and texture.

Fire Guardian Process

Some more process! I've got a couple more paintings recorded, so I'll be posting those next week.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have - about the process itself, or otherwise :D

Candle Illustrations Process

The process for a few illustrations I did for a school project, I was experimenting with doing oily, juicier brushstrokes.

The whole original recording was about 15 hours.

Here's the full process for the candle guy painting, the whole vid was about 10 hr before it was sped up.

Kobold King Process

I haven't posted for a while here since I was sick and took a little break, but I'll be back to posting daily process vids again.

A part of this dude's process got corrupted, but here's the rest, more to come soon!

Commissioned Painting Process

Client work usually means a more controlled and less painterly process. The whole recording is about 10 hours long. I finally got good internet so I'll be able to upload high quality longer videos; you can expect more of those daily.

I also plan to start streaming next week (I bought a new mic for it!). I'll probably mostly be doing studies so might be uploading those streams as process v...

More Portrait Studies

I'll probably change the theme these work and work on drapery, I find that cycling themes like that is a good way to structure studies longer-term

More Studies and the Importance of Volume

Here are more daily studies, some of which I don't really like, but I don't feel strong frustration or negative emotions, even if I completely botch a study, simply because I do a lot of them. In that sense, a large volume of studies (and work generally) is probably one of the surest defenses against burnout or artist block. By value of just doing a lot, there comes a certain point when you're ...

Another Kobold Painting Process

Here's the process of another painting. I think this one took around 7 hours, and I painted it a bit differently than I do usually.

For most of my character paintings I have a lineart layer and place flat colors underneath (especially if I'm going for more saturation or patterns). After that I use multiply and soft light layers to get shadows and highlights, and then I just paint over tha...

Miner Process

The first character for my series I had already posted about, and the style is finally something I'm happy with and would want to stick to for the rest of the characters

Pretty heavily inspired by Bogdan Rezunenko's art: https://www.artstation.com/pumpkinpie

Here's the final painting:
