I just finished planning a trip to Scotland, so I’ve been thinking about lush, green, epic landscapes! I also want to improve at rendering with a more painterly style. I struggle with this a lot because I really like the clean, crisp contours of the lasso tool and the hard round brush. Basically, I prefer to outline the shapes rather than blend them together. However, I do want my work to be ...

I've had so many struggles with my tendons throughout my life. I've talked about my repetitive strain injuries before, where my elbow and wrist ached from drawing - something I've managed to overcome with time, but it was a problem for years. I've also had a lot of injuries from running in my knees, ankles, hips - the list goes on. I think my tendons are just a weak point for me and something I...

This month, we'll be doing a double challenge: both lighting and color at the same time! That's right: we'll be studying colorful lighting - which is no joke! 😉 This is a great way to increase your understanding of the face planes, as well as practicing your ability to combine different colors. This can be intense, so don't hesitate to simplify and stylize your studies....

For those who missed it, here's the full March Q&A session! We talked a lot about perfectionism: the different ways it manifests, how we can shift our focus to other things, and how you can set goals to offset the hold that it can have. I think this is such an important topic to talk about and I'm so glad I got to share my thoughts on it!
Some of the other topics covered in this sessi...

This month's challenge was on painting dense foliage! It can be really hard to capture the complexity of multiple leaves without getting lost in the details, and that was definitely a challenge for me with this one - but in the end I really enjoyed drawing these huge, floppy leaves. There's something so satisfying about it once you get the rough painting down!
