Bathroom (2023)

Travis, with a few vacation days left, had chosen to spend them in the quaint, sun-kissed town where his friend Tom lived in California.

Their days were filled with laughter and explorations of culinary wonders. Tom showed him the small joys of the town - a cozy seafood joint by the pier, a charming bookstore redolent with the scent of old pages and coffee, and an evening at the local theater that felt like a step back in time.

On his final day, a bittersweet feeling enveloped Travis as he packed for the morning flight. "I had a really good time, Tom," he said, his voice revealing his reluctance to leave.

"I'm glad. You have to visit again soon," Tom responded with a warm smile.

"Definitely." Travis zipped up his bag, placing it near the door, a silent farewell to the town that had captivated him.

Tom's sudden exclamation, "Oh shoot," snapped Travis out of his reverie. He was fumbling through papers, a crease of worry on his forehead.

"What's wrong?" Travis asked, concern etching his features.

"My sister’s flight! It's today, and I need to pick her up from a different airport," Tom explained, his frustration evident.

"Don't stress about it," Travis reassured, offering a comforting smile. "I can manage the airport trip. Go get your sister."

"Are you sure?" Tom asked, already half into his jacket.

"Yeah, it's fine. I'll lock up," Travis assured him.

"Dude, you’re a lifesaver," Tom said, pulling Travis into a grateful hug. "I promise, next time will be better planned. Sorry about this."

With a final wave, Tom left, and Travis felt the quiet of the house envelop him sooner than expected.

He arranged an Uber, which was 45 minutes away. After placing his bag in the trunk, a sudden realization hit him - he hadn't locked the door. Signaling the driver to wait, he hurried back, noticing a window ajar. "Odd," he muttered, securing it.

As he turned to leave, a wave of dizziness washed over him. The room spun, and his vision blurred. "What's happening?" he thought, struggling to stay conscious. Then, everything went black.

Travis awoke to darkness, a disorienting silence enveloping him. Groggily rising, he called out for Tom, but his voice seemed to vanish into a void of quiet.

'How long was I out?' he wondered, his thoughts interrupted by a thunderous crash behind him. Panic surged through him.

"YEAH, MOM, I DROPPED HER OFF," boomed a voice, so loud and close that Travis flinched. Another crash followed, and then a blinding light flooded the room.

In that harsh illumination, Travis faced a staggering reality. He was minuscule, no larger than a bug, in the midst of Tom's living room. Towering above him was Tom, a colossal figure now. Travis’s mind reeled with shock and disbelief, struggling to comprehend his drastic change in size and the overwhelming presence of his giant friend.

"NO, HE SEEMS TO HAVE GONE," Tom's voice echoed like thunder, his every word a tremor in Travis's world. Tom stepped over him, oblivious to the tiny figure below. Each footstep was a mini quake to Travis, reverberating through the floor.

"YEAH, WE HAD A GOOD TIME, MOM. I’LL MISS HIM…" Tom's voice faded as he moved away, heading to his room to continue the conversation.

Left in the vast expanse of the room, Travis was alone, minuscule and unseen. The familiar setting now felt like an alien landscape, every object a looming monument, every sound a deafening roar. The enormity of his situation settled in, a mix of fear and wonder gripping him as he faced the surreal reality of his shrunken existence.

Throughout the night, Travis made desperate attempts to capture Tom’s attention. He tried everything from climbing over the towering furniture to shouting at the top of his minuscule lungs, but all his efforts seemed futile. Tom moved about the house, oblivious, his actions unguarded and natural in his perceived solitude.

It was in the early hours of the morning, in the bathroom, that Travis faced a horrifying reality. As Tom stumbled sleepily into the room, Travis found himself lost in the jungle of the bathroom mat. The fibers, once soft and insignificant, now loomed like dense underbrush around him.

Travis’s heart pounded as he watched Tom's gigantic foot descending towards him. Time seemed to slow as he realized his insignificance in this vast new world. By sheer luck or fate, Tom shifted his foot at the last moment, narrowly missing Travis. The rush of air from the movement was like a gale, knocking Travis over.

Lying there, panting and shaken, Travis grappled with a chilling realization. In this new, diminutive form, his life was as fragile as the insects he used to pay no mind to. The thought that even Tom, his friend, might inadvertently end his existence sent a shiver down his spine. It underscored his vulnerability and the precariousness of his situation.

As Tom left the bathroom, oblivious to the near-tragic incident, Travis lay there amidst the fibers of the mat, overwhelmed by a sense of isolation and the daunting task of survival in a world where he was now less than a speck in the eyes of those he once stood alongside.
