The Spanish settlers named the lands Nuevo MΓ©xico (New Mexico) after the Aztec Valley of the Rio Grande River in Mexico. Contrary to popular belief, New Mexico is not part of Mexico. The best definition Iβve heard about being a US citizen is that you have to accept that both Mississippi (most conservative state) and Massachusetts (often considered the most liberal state) both belong in the US.
