CHARACTER PROFILE: CODY WEBER

Cody Weber

Age: 30

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 195lbs

Former Army Ranger Cody Weber took a six-figure inheritance from his deceased mother and invested it all in a Special Forces watch company started by some other former Spec Ops guys he knew. The watch company blew up big and some of the gang think Cody might be worth eight figures.

Cody met Carla in his hometown of Alpine, Texas, where she was looking at ranch properties for a client. Cody and his roguish charm swept Carla off her feet and they were married only a year later. Cody was still in 2nd Ranger Battalion and his luck with the investment hadn't even happened yet.

Cody moved to New York City where Carla already lived, moving them from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side. Wartime Watches is headquartered in Manhattan, but Cody's not an office guy—he mostly handles their marketing and heads their YouTube channel, Instagram, and does Podcasts.

What pseudonym do you write these novels with kt?

Tracey52

LPVO = Low Power Variable Optic and RDO = Red Dot Optic. Good on you for learning that skill, even if you choose not to exercise the commitment and responsibility, it's important knowledge to have. Never know when it might come in handy. I mostly punch paper, hunt every once in a while. Its a good stress reliever. Non gun people would probably find that assertion weird, but the concentration and focus required helps tune out all the background clutter thoughts that may be causing you stress, even if only for a few hours. Only thing I've done that comes close is riding a motorcycle. Probably for the same reasons.

L_S87

Just showing off the little I know: Aimpoint was the first. I don't know what LPVO or RDO is, but I did go out and take my gun test. In Canada you have to take a day long course before you qualify to get your certificate to buy a gun. I did the regular course but also the restricted firearm course which means I could buy a handgun if I wanted. I have no guns however, even though I live in the woods and fairly remote. I just wanted the experience of handling guns, even if it's just for a day or two. What kind of shooting do you do?

KT Morrison

Well, you'd have the NODs flipped up when not in use. Better to have and not need, than need and not have. Even if you start during the day, nothing says you might not need it come nightfall. Theres a mount on that helmet, its just hidden behind the goggles. As to Aimpoint, you are correct. They invented the red dot sight, which most would consider the first modern optic, certainly they are the go to for many when it comes to such devices. I prefer an LPVO or prism sight but thats because my astigmatism doesn't play nice with RDOs. As to harem novels, there's a lot out there I don't like, but when done right, it hits that soft spot in the heart where there's a lot of love and sharing.

L_S87

NODs on his helmet during the daytime? And Aimpoint is the first modern optic, right? I listen to Jack Carr audiobooks and jot things down. I keep my male spec ops guys out of the service and more involved with organized crime and OGA and black ops. That way. I don't have. to sound too authentic. I tried harem lit but it was too female oriented. Lots of relationship stuff, ha ha. Didn't do so well.

KT Morrison

Not an ACOG, KT, though I will give you huge props for at least knowing that's a combat optic in common use. More closely resembles an Aimpoint PRO, but it's not that either. Appears to be some sort of prism optic, though not an Elcan. If he was a spec ops guy, I'd expect him to have a NODs setup with an IR laser as well. That's not a certainty, but is common. (I'll let you have some fun looking up all those acronyms the military and gun industry is so fond of) You are right, that at least for me, that I do not expect that kind of accuracy from you, or really any author that writes this genre. I start reading game lit or harem lit, and I definitely do. I may have written a somewhat harsh review a time or two about not being lazy and doing the proper research if an author is going to write a book with that type or storyline.

L_S87

The best part. of writing. romance novels is I don't have to be. too specific about stuff like that, ha ha! No one cares. too much about the specifics, only the love story. I could never write a real Navy SEAL book. That said, I'll give it a go: He has a Colt M4A1 with a suppressor and an ACOG. ACOG? I think that's right. How'd I do?

KT Morrison

KT, Cody’s rifle appears to be the M4A1, fitted with a sound suppressor, is that correct? It has seen long use by US SOF. Rangers used the HK 223 or 416 for a long time. Neither one looks like Cody’ Colt rifle.

Donkatsu

No, Philippe owns a furniture company! Ha ha—I have written some SAS and Delta and Navy SEAL romance novels on the side that almost always feature some shady side dealings with fellows like Devlin!

KT Morrison

"orthogonal"? They said there would be no math! Seriously, this is becoming a great, sweet story. Is Philippe one of Cody's buddies from Le Commandement des opérations spéciales? There must be a lot of backstory to fill in. Any chance they are shipping out of Canada to the Commonwealth (SAS, Gorkha branding) using Devlin's company as a broker?

Donkatsu

(J Jonah Jameson laughing in case the gif doesn't load, ha ha)

Also: filling holes in marketing...?
via GIPHY

KT Morrison

I see more depth in Cody now. It'd be hard giving in to Carla's career, but he might be the kind of guy confident enough to do just that and also endure his friends' ribbing. I like it. It makes Cody work better for me!

KT Morrison

I love this kind of window into your thinking of not just what the characters do on the pages, but who they are behind them. I didn't make that statement to say you were wrong, so much as to hopefully pick your brain on the incongruity of the company vs placement. Because you're right, anyone that would start a business with a "tough military guy" persona making "tough military grade watches" isn't trying to portray themselves as a 5th Ave dweller. Seeing a hole in the market and then portraying yourself as being an "average person" who suffered from the same lack of support and decided to fill said hole using your military experience as a backdrop is a common trend in that space. While i definitely don't see Cody as a "5th Ave rich guy", i could definitely see him as a "my wife is amazingly unique and i'm willing to make some sacrifices to keep her happy" kind of guy. Including living in Manhattan, a rather target rich environment for their lifestyle. Speaking of holes in a market needing to be filled...

L_S87

I totally agree. It would make more sense for the company to be non-city based, especially not NYC or LA. It would practically kill their business model to be seen as a city company. Way I see it: Wartime have a head office in Manhattan. Carla is a luxury real estate agent in Manhattan so has to be location based. Cody lives in Manhattan but pressures Carla on the daily about getting out of the city and moving to Texas. He travels a lot to do his podcast and do marketing and trade shows and gun shows, etc. Cody and Carla probably have a little piece of land somewhere in Texas. (Jeez, L_S87, don't you listen to Cody's podcast? It's a long running joke about when Cody's going to convince his wife to move out of that hellhole, ha ha). Thanks for the pushback, it really helps me shore up the backstory. I knew when I said Manhattan for the watch company it wasn't the right place at all, but I like to present myself incongruities. That way I have to think my way out of them. In real life there's always something that is orthogonal to the cliche or the expected. In this case it's Cody is a typical spec ops bro, but lookie here: he lives in Manhattan. His buddies make fun of him and probably roast him about how Carla is the boss in the family etc. I love it!

KT Morrison

Me too!

KT Morrison

I find this backstory interesting. It does promote why Cody is so confident in himself and lends context to his and Carla's place in the world. I do find the marketing side intriguing, because the business of Rolex, Breitling, Omega etc makes sense in Manhattan. I would think a spec ops guy would want to setup business in Texas as his watches would probably cater more to the Suunto, Garmin and G-Shock crowd. Perhaps i'm reading too much into that.

L_S87

Loving this background info & context.

Bwood

Ha ha. He passes the toilet tube test! Yes, sometimes I do it to keep things straight in my head.

KT Morrison

Oh wow this is really interesting context, KT! Is this how you start with your characters sometimes? Thank you for your service, Cody ... ... But oh great, just what the world needs, another podcast ... One bit of criticism - I get the age, height and weight measurements, but how you gon' create a KT bull character profile without sharing his height laying down? 😀
